Makeup Recommendations from Ai Nagasawa

If you’ve decided to do your own makeup for your bridal shower, stagette, or even your wedding, you’re probably wondering which products to use that last long and are wallet-friendly. I’ve decided to ask Vancouver hair and makeup artist Ai Nagasawa for her thoughts. Ai has been on my blog before, both as a bride and as a vendor. Ai has been in the beauty industry for over 10 years and her clientele includes everyone from fashion models to blushing brides and anyone who wants an extra beauty boost.

Face Primer

L’Oréal Magic Perfecting Base

“This primer goes on unbelievably smooth and velvet soft!! It is great for all skin types and can be worn on its own even if you don’t wear foundation. It creates a beautiful evenness to the skin tone and texture.”

Where to Buy: $18.49 at Shoppers Drug Mart | $16.99 at London Drugs

Foundation

MAC Face and Body Foundation

“I have been a fan of MAC’s Face and Body foundation for a long time.  It wears very well and goes on easily on all skin types. The coverage is not too heavy so I recommend it to those brides who want a light to sheer application of foundation.”

Where to Buy: $40 at MAC store or any MAC counter at the Bay

MAC Studio Tech Foundation

“If the bride desires a more full coverage foundation, I love MAC’s Studio Tech and also Color Sciences Mineral compact powder foundation.”

Where to Buy: Studio Tech $36.50 at MAC store or any MAC counter at the Bay

Blush

NARS Blush

“I love all the different NARS powder blush colors. They go on beautifully and wear long on the skin.”

Where to Buy: $32 at Sephora

Eyeshadow Primer

MAC Paint in “Untitled”

“My absolute favorite one that I can’t live without is MAC paint in untitled.  I love how the shade does not disrupt the eye shadow application as well, it is super long wearing and completely water proof. This is a must have for anyone who has problems with eyeshadow creasing after an hour or two of wearing shadow.”

Where to Buy: $21 at MAC store or any MAC counter at the Bay

Face Powder

MAC Blot Powder

“For setting your foundation and touching up your shiny t-zone I always use MAC Blot Powder with shades ranging from light to dark. I love the transparency of this product as it allows you to apply it as much as you need to throughout the day without any color build up.  If you use a pigmented compact powder as touch up throughout your day, the color will build up and your skin will  result in looking a few shades deeper.”

Where to Buy: $28 at MAC store or any MAC counter at the Bay

Eyeshadow

MAC or Make Up Forever Eyeshadows

“MAC makes the best quality eyeshadow hands down. I have used many different brands but have found through experience that the color pay off is the best with MAC shadows. I also found Make up Forever has great eyeshadows.”

Where to Buy: various prices, MAC and Sephora

Waterproof Eyeliner

Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner

“This liner will not budge and has a great felt tip pen applicator.”

Where to Buy: $26 at Sephora

Waterproof Mascara

Lancome Definicils Waterproof Mascara

“This mascara delivers lushness to the lashes, easy application and is totally waterproof.”

Where to Buy: $31 at Sephora

Cover Girl Waterproof Mascara

”If you are not looking to spend $30 on a mascara, I also love Cover girl waterproof mascara.  It’s affordable and it works!!”

Where to Buy: $10.99 at Shoppers Drug | $9.99 at London Drugs

False Eyelashes

MAC Lashes

“If you don’t mind paying a little bit extra, I love MAC lashes. There are many designs to choose from, the hair is soft and they are reusable.”

Where to Buy: $18 per set at MAC store or any MAC counter at the Bay

Ardell Lashes

“I also like Ardells. They have many different styles AND the price is right!”

Where to Buy: various prices, London Drugs

Longlasting Lipstick

Cover Girl Outlast Lipcolour

“I went to the gym, took a shower, had lunch with the girls and came home to find that my lipstick was still on!! Also the Revlon Colorstay works well too. There is very little transfer so when you kiss the groom, you won’t leave lipstick all over his face!”

Where to Buy: $14.99 at Shoppers Drug | $11.99 at London Drugs

Other notable mentions…

If you want a nice glow without the sun, Ai recommends the St. Tropez Self Tan Bronzing Mousse ($40)

“So many of my brides have used it and looks absolutely natural and gorgeous!! This tanner is great for all skin tones.  I’ve always found tanners to be either too fake or orange looking but this one makes you look like you just got back from the Caribbean!”

If you want some home hair removal solutions, Ai also loves Parissa Cold Wax

“Parissa cold wax works just as well as any wax at a salon. It works great on both the face and body. Shaving usually leaves unsightly bumps and dries up the skin so waxing would be a better option.”
