To Change or Not to Change... Your Name

It’s every bride’s choice, to keep her name or assume her new husband’s name… but how do you decide on this very big decision? It’s definitely not for everyone and there are both negative and positive spins on it. Some consider it a symbol of their blessed union, while others perceive it as losing their identity. There are those who have built their business and reputation with their maiden name and changing it may be confusing for customers. There are those who want to combine both surnames or completely change it at all!

Regardless… I have just one piece of advice for those considering changing their name… make sure you are 100% happy with it and don’t just change it because it will please your partner… ok that’s 2 pieces of advice :P This is your decision, not your partner’s, don’t let anyone else pressure you otherwise.

If you do decide to change your name, here are a few things you need to update ASAP:

According to the BC Vital Statistics Agency, you do not need to go through a legal name change if you are just assuming your spouse’s name; however, if you are hyphenating, adding or changing your name, you have to go through the whole process. Be aware that you may be asked for proof of name change like your marriage certificate or a government issued ID with your new name. Some institutions will also charge fees for replacement cards, so make sure you budget accordingly.
