Choosing Your First Dance Song

Choosing Your First Dance Song

Believe it or not, my husband and I didn’t decide on our first dance song until days before the wedding. It was difficult because ”our song” doesn’t exist and we kept vetoing each other’s choices. Looking back, I’ve come up with some pointers that can help speed up this process for you and your fiancé. Hope it works for you!

  • Find common ground – Do you have a band you both love? Do they have love songs or a song that has special meaning to both of you?
  • “Battle of the Top 5′s” – Each write your top 5 songs that you want to dance to. If a certain song was written in both of your lists, use that song. If not, sit down with him and listen to each song and figure out which one you both like. Make sure the songs you include in your lists are songs your partner will potentially like too. If this fails… Move onto my next point.
  • Listen to the radio – If classics aren’t your thing, maybe a current hit might be a better fit.
  • Use the song your parents danced to – Why not continue the tradition? Or use a modern cover of that song if it exists.
  • It doesn’t have to be slow – Your first dance doesn’t have to be a ballad, do a fun choreographed dance if that better reflects you as a couple.

Whatever song you choose, make sure it is meaningful to the both of you. Try not to pick a long song too. If you’re shy like me, I think a 2-3 minute song is good enough. That way your guests won’t be watching you sway for too long :P
