Ask The Pros: Make Your Ceremony Personal!

A wedding isn’t a wedding without an officiant… and the most common (and also cost effective) way to hire one is by searching through the Marriage Commissioner database in the BC Vital Statistics Agency. For $75 + GST they will officiate your wedding and use an approved wedding ceremony with little to no customization. It’s good and all, but some people want to put more emphasis on the ceremony, tailor it to show off their personality and have it reflect their unique relationship. I decided to ask one of the city’s sought after officiants Darian Kovacs for his thoughts on why couples would choose to put more into their ceremony.

“It’s the start to your big day. It’s what sets the tone and gets the party started. You gotta make it about your personality, your style, your essence. Make sure it’s done right and personalized.”

What you should know though is that these services tend to cost upwards of a few hundred dollars. How can couples on a budget have it all? Darian suggested a fantastic idea.

“If it’s not in the budget for you to have an officiant who’s going to take the time to get to know you / your story…  I would say just get legalized by a commissioner, a few days before the ceremony, and then have the ceremony performed by a friend or family member, who’s good in front of a crowd… or even a drama student!  More and more couples are learning that they can actually do this. Most people feel pressured to have a stranger perform their ceremony or a religious person. You have a choice.”

It’s very meaningful to have a close friend or family member marry you so I think this is a great alternative. Or if you’re looking for something out of the box, creating a skit or some kind of performance would be a fresh way to celebrate your union. You can do whatever you want, because technically you’re already married :) I didn’t know that this was a common thing to do.

If you still want to choose a Marriage Commissioner, you can always get creative with your vows, since you do have the option to write your own. You can include short readings, little jokes, but of course, don’t go off on a tangent :P Darian has some vow ideas and sample readings on his website, which can help inspire you if you’re stuck.

Thank you Darian for your thoughts. If you want to find out more about him and his services, visit his social media links below:
