For The Budget Bride

The Hart House Restaurant for the Budget Bride

The award-winning Hart House Restaurant is a popular destination for Metro Vancouver couples. I went for a tour of the over 100 year old Tudor-style mansion. If there was one word to describe this venue, it would be “convenient.” It’s centrally-located in Burnaby, very close to the freeway which makes it easy to get to from all over Metro Vancouver. The restaurant itself is situated in Deer Lake Park overlooking the water, great for photoshoots with a natural setting but it’s also steps away from the Burnaby Village Museum if you want a little more character in your photos. You can walk amongst 1920′s inspired heritage buildings and they even have a restored 1912 C.W. Parker carousel available for use, imagine the fun you can have with it! The Hart House can accommodate both your wedding ceremony and reception, but there is also a chapel nearby should you wish to have a separate location for the ceremony. For your out of town guests, there are lots of hotels and B&B’s nearby. It’s nice to have options when you choose a venue and the Hart House definitely has lots of them.

During peak season the best deal the Hart House can offer is a Saturday daytime ceremony on the lawn overlooking the water, followed by a lunch reception in their Dining Room. The rental fee for the Dining Room is $800 and the minimum food and beverage spend is only $4,000 for this type of reception, which is easily attainable if you have 80 guests, the maximum that the Dining Room can accommodate.  For meals, you have the option of choosing either a plated lunch menu ($48-56/person) or a buffet ($49-68/person). This option is available all year round but in the off season the minimums may be less. Daytime functions occur from 11AM and end at 4PM with setup starting at 2 hours prior to the event.

Between October and May, other rooms are available for intimate gatherings such as the Rosedale Room and the Cottage. The Rosedale Room is located on the second floor of the restaurant and can seat 80 guests. The Avalon Room is next door and available as a Bride’s Room. For an even smaller gathering their Lakeside Cottage is also available for 32 of your closest friends and family. The Cottage has big glass windows to allow a lot of natural light in and is located just steps away from the ceremony space. Room rentals for the Rosedale Room start at $400 and the Cottage is $300, but rental prices are negotiable on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Keep in mind though that the Hart House Restaurant is not open on Mondays. Only 1 wedding will be held on site during the same timeslot so the Hart House staff will be focusing on your event and yours alone. Evening events start at 5pm and end at midnight. Events may have an earlier start time but additional fees apply.

The Hart House has other perks that can help lighten the financial burden. Ceremony fees depend on the number of guests, a guestlist between 50 and 100 will be $200, but  if you go below 50, it will only cost you $100. If you bring in cupcakes, the cake cutting fee will be waived. In lieu of menu tastings, they invite the couple for a complimentary dinner, who can resist a free date night? If you want to have a wedding on a long weekend, consider having it on a Sunday because the rates are kept the same as a normal Sunday. The minimum food and beverage spends vary depending on the number of guests and the time of year so it’s not a bad idea to consult the catering manager and compare different dates for when to hold your wedding. The Hart House has its own parking lot with plenty of free parking for your guests. The Cottage, Dining Room, and outdoor tent are also all wheelchair accessible. All weddings booked will always include the services of a banquet manager, banquet captain, service team, and items like tables, chairs, white linens, cloth napkins, white china, flatware, stemware, tables for the guestbook, gifts, and cake.

If you wish to set up an appointment to see this space, call 604-298-4278. Have some lunch and then go for a walk around the lake! It’s a nice way to spend an afternoon :)
