Soundhouse Studios for the Budget Bride

OK  I know what you’re thinking… Soundhouse Studios sounds like a place for bands to jam… well it is, but they thought they’d share their gorgeous mezzanine to accommodate private functions too. I’m so glad they did! I met with owner, Karen Parusel, and I loved the room as soon as I set foot in it. The studios are owned by  Karen and her husband-to-be Christopher Gautreau (but his friends call him “Pher”) and normally cater to recording artists who use their rehearsal spaces. You could be partying it up where the likes of Ray Davies of the Kinks, Japandroids and Daniel Wesley have been jamming… just to name a few.

The renovation of Soundhouse Studios is a labour of love: new floors, new rooms, new ceilings… Pher even upcycled old wood, refinished it, and turned into a fantastic feature wall. Their 1,800 square foot room can fit 100 people for a standup reception or 90 for a sit-down dinner. It’s $600 to rent the space for 5 hours and $1,000 for a full day (10 hours). If you need to come in earlier to decorate, just mention it to Karen and she would be happy to try to make it work if possible. The beauty about this place is that you are allowed to bring in your own catering and your own liquor at no extra charge… which means you don’t have to pay for outrageous liquor markup and corkage fees, yes! The facility doesn’t have a kitchen, just a fridge and microwave. This is an important detail for your catering company to know. Karen tells me they have had events that were catered by a food truck parked outside their building. An interesting alternative to a traditional dinner reception… If you want your party to last late into the night, this is the place for you. They are willing to work with you on how late you want to stay. As for cleanup, you can either do it yourself or for an extra charge, they can take care of it for you. They simply ask that, if you do choose to take care of it yourself, please follow their checklist and leave things tidy. If you need your rentals picked up the next day, just let them know and they will work with you on that too. You will need to bring in your own banquet chairs and tables though… they have some pieces of furniture available for you to use but they can be removed upon request. They can also provide a PA System, audio equipment and musical equipment for an extra charge.

Soundhouse Studios

Soundhouse Studios is located just outside Downtown Vancouver on West 8th Avenue, between Ontario and Manitoba Streets. It is walking distance to the Broadway/City Hall Canada Line station as well as many bus routes on Main or Cambie. They have limited parking spaces available but there is ample street parking… I would encourage your guests to carpool though. If you’re a bride looking to have a more casual affair or want an unconventional venue, you have to check out Soundhouse Studios. It is a blank canvas where you can bring your vision to life or just bask in the beautiful simplicity it currently has. Contact them at 604-875-8785 to inquire or visit their website, Facebook page, and follow them on Twitter to find out more about them. They are restricted to only doing 2 weddings a month so better book fast! Thank you Karen for inviting me to see your space. :)
