What Would I Do Differently: Engagement Session

What Would I Do Differently: Engagement Session

I remember the day I took my engagement shots for my first wedding… it was a frantic day. I had to run a bunch of errands which included driving to Burnaby (from Coquitlam) to sort out my wedding dress. I was also stressed about the weather because it couldn’t decide whether it was going to rain or stay cloudy. My photographer and I decided to just go for it. So I rushed back to Coquitlam and unfortunately got stuck in heavy traffic. When I got home, I quickly changed, put on makeup and we had a photoshoot down the street at Lafarge Lake. Our photographer did a fantastic job and I loved the photos… but I couldn’t help but feel like I could’ve done more to improve our session. Here’s what I learned from that crazy day…

  • Get professional hair and makeup done – Schedule your hair and makeup trial on the day of your engagement shoot. In my inexperience at the time, I didn’t do that. I looked ok with what little primping I did before the shoot but it could’ve been better. Even a nice little blowout at a salon will do. These are your engagement photos… you should look extra special!
  • Wear something nice – We wanted to be captured as natural as possible… so we wore our street clothes. I wore a nice sweater, jeans and boots. He wore a hoodie, jeans and sneakers. While that wasn’t a bad selection, I wish we had photos of us wearing something nicer… like a dress for me and a dress shirt for him. So if you have the option of an outfit change, I suggest you bring something a little more dressy… like you’re going out on a date.
  • Keep your schedule free – I felt extra stressed because I had errands to run before the shoot, so I didn’t feel completely relaxed. My advice, don’t schedule too many things prior the shoot and leave a lot of time to get ready (I pretty much had 30 minutes).
  • Have a flexible date – If the weather isn’t going well, don’t be bummed if you have to re-schedule. With everything that happened that day and the possibility of rain, it was all such a gamble. Luckily it went well but still, I would’ve probably enjoyed myself more if I wasn’t worrying about the weather.
  • Choose a location because you want it, rather than convenience – I was okay with choosing Lafarge Lake as our photoshoot site because it was somewhat sentimental. It was also very convenient, being a 2 minute drive from home at the time. I wish I chose a different setting or a second location. Again, because we were strapped for time, there was no way that was going to happen.

What I did right though, was hire a great photographer. If you’re curious, I hired Vancity Vendor Pure White Studio and Derek made everything look flawless… you couldn’t even tell my stress level that day. It really makes a huge difference when your photographer knows how to calm you down and have fun with you. Hope you will take these tips to heart. Good luck on your shoot!

Great Ideas I must say Jeannine. These are really helpful tips, as you gained them from your own experience. One should keep them for a better experience.
