Vancity Vendor: Elisa Fabiano Events

Elisa Fabiano knew she wanted to be an event planner since high school. Planning her prom made her realize that perhaps, one day, she could do this for a living. It wasn’t until after she planned her own wedding (with a whopping 400+ guestlist!) did she start thinking about getting in the business seriously. After completing the Event Planning diploma program at BCIT and obtaining an Event Planning Certificate from VCC, she launched her company, Elisa Fabiano Events. She has been serving Metro Vancouver brides and grooms for 5 years now.

Elisa plans everything, from corporate events to birthday parties to Bat and Bar Mitzvahs, but her specialty is weddings. Aside from full event planning services, she also provides Day of Coordination services for $600. It includes ceremony & reception setup, wedding day timeline creation, event supervision for 12 hours, and more. One day, she hopes to offer decor rentals as well, which include linens, furniture and chair covers.

Elisa can find inspiration in anything, from places she’s travelled, the current season, or the bride’s favourite colour or flower. She creates vision boards for the couple to help come up with the right theme and vision for their wedding.

A Few Words With Elisa…

How do you accommodate brides with lower budgets?
“Weddings can cost a fortune, I love what I do and I love working with people so I’ve made my planning services affordable so that all brides can hire a wedding planner. I’m a very creative, hands on person and I love to create beautiful things and events, so I’ve included the cost of setup and teardown in my planning prices.  I work with some great vendors and I know where to get high end décor, rental and florals.  My team and I will set up and tear down and keep the couple within their budget.”

What sets you apart from others in the same field? 
“My personable approach.  My passion is not only planning events, but working with people.  I like to really spend a lot of time with the bride and groom as well as get to know the families, so I can really assess what the needs of the day will be and provide everyone with a stress free wedding day.”

What do you enjoy most about your job?
“My job allows me to be creative and unique in so many ways, that in itself is what I love most about my job. But what I really love is transforming a room or venue in an amazing way to a couple’s vision, while working with wonderful people.”

How do you handle unforeseen problems on the wedding day? Can you give an example of a problem that you solved on the spot?
“There are always going to be unforeseen problem that arise on a wedding day, you can count on that. The most important thing is to remain calm and find a solution quickly, effortlessly and without costing the couple any more money.  My motto is there is always a solution to a problem you just have to find it. I was working a wedding last year and the rental company had shorted us on 60” round guest tables; we were 4 short to be exact.  We couldn’t get a hold of the rental company that we had ordered them from or any other company in the city.  So I asked the venue if they had some long rectangle 8 foot tables and white in house linens. They did so we used the four 8 foot rectangle tables as family tables closest to the head tables and no one knew the difference.  I actually had guests tell me it what a nice touch it was to single out the family by having them seated at different size tables.”

Some people think wedding planning and coordination is an extra expense, what are your thoughts on that? 
“It is a common misconception that a wedding planner is an added expense.  I can actually help save you money by knowing what your vision and budget is and ensuring that it all gets done within that budget.  We also match you up with vendors that suit your needs and budget and pass along any discounts that we might get to our clients.  A wedding planner is also worth the value your getting because you are able to spend more time with you fiancé, family and friends while we worry about the planning process.”

If you had to plan a wedding in 3 months, how would you tackle that?
“All weddings have challenges, but a short time frame can provide the biggest challenge.  This type of challenge can only be tackled in a few ways; you need very specific time frames and agendas for booking venues, caterers, photographers etc.  Book a venue, photographer and church/ceremony site within the week.  Everything else can be done within the three months provided the bride has a clear vision for the day. My advice to the bride in this situation is to keep is simple and know what you want at your wedding.  Decisions will need to be made quickly but she will require some flexibility too.”

What is the easiest way to transform a room?
“I think the easiest way to transform a room is with flowers.  I love flowers!!  The venues will usually have linens you can use or come with the venue rental, but a floral arrangement on each table makes all the difference.   You can also modify the arrangement to suit your budget by changing the flowers being used or by buying your own vases to put the flowers in.”

If you had one piece of advice for a bride and groom, what would it be?
“Hire good people and enjoy your day. It goes by so fast, laugh lots on your wedding day and make great memories.”

  • The winning couple will be entitled to a full wedding day coordination package worth $3000 (see above for outline of services). Any and all other costs associated with the event will be the sole responsibility of the contest winner.

I met my fiance 8 years ago, he’s been a fantastic stepfather to my 3 kids, who are now older teens, we share a mutual love of flyfishing and the outdoors. He has also looked after me the past couple of years when things have been rough due to my health (injury). We’re not even married yet and he’s been there through better and especially worst! I can’t wait to marry this man, but it’s been hard to save up with 3 kids and now me off on disability, but we hope for May 2012. Just a small family wedding in Ladner, I can’t wait to start planning it soon.
