Vancity Vendor: Fairy Godmother Weddings

Devon Hird… oops I mean Devon Dunn (she’s a newlywed!) is a self-proclaimed sufferer of what she calls CPD – “Compulsive Planning Disorder.” Nothing to worry about – all it means is that she’s got a bad case of wedding brain which ultimately ends up benefiting her many many brides. Devon is a wedding planner, certified by the Wedding Planners Institute of Canada. In 2008, she started working with Fairy Godmother Weddings as an apprentice, while it was under a previous ownership. She worked her way up the ladder and 5 years later, she is now the proud owner of a company she can call her own… ready to tackle any bridal crisis with her team of Wedding Coaches to back her up.

Smitten Events offers wedding planning services to suit couples with varying budgets such as Set-up/Take down crews, Guidance Meetings, Event Styling, Day of Coordination (which begins 3 months prior to the wedding), Full Coaching, plus additional services to fully customize your planning needs. Day of Coordination rates start at $1,000 and Full Coaching starts at $2,000, you’ll have to have a little chat with Devon about your wedding so she can give you a more accurate quote because the size of your event will affect your price.

Event Styling is a new service that they are excited to offer and eventually they may dabble a bit more in the Destination Wedding industry. If you love the look of their events and would like to get in touch, visit their website, be a fan on Facebook, or follow them on Twitter. They would love to hear from you!

Vancity Bride Special Rates

Smitten Events is pleased to offer Vancity Bride readers a special Day of Coordination rate of $750 (based on 100 guests or less) for wedding dates before December 31, 2013 (subject to availability). Just let them know you want the Vancity Bride rate! Thanks Devon and team!

A Few Words With Devon…

How do you accommodate brides with lower budgets?
“Our clients with low end budgets require a lot more vendor research. We work with them to help find the best vendors for their budget and vision. This is a service provided in our Full Coaching package. We have also created the Set-Up crew ($200+) so a savvy bride could still have her wedding vision executed on the wedding day without relying on her Maids or family to do so.”

What sets you apart from others in the same field?
“We call ourselves Wedding Coaches! We have found that majority of our clients want to be quite involved in their wedding planning so as Coaches, we are there to guide them through the process. This method of planning provides our clients with a great sense of accomplishment on their BIG day.”

What do you enjoy most about your job?
“I enjoy all the fine details that go into planning a wedding (from the check lists to the wedding favours). I also gain overwhelming satisfaction when I see clients kick back, relax and enjoy their wedding because they know they’re in good hands.”

Where do you draw inspiration from when styling? Is there a particular style you execute well?
“Our inspiration is first drawn from our client’s vision and then our artistic imaginations take off from there. Thank goodness for Pinterest as we can now coordinate both our ideas and the client’s vision to create a grand masterpiece.”

How do you handle unforeseen problems on the wedding day?
“We have at least two Wedding Coaches or a Wedding Coach and Assistant at every wedding. This is important as there are MANY details that can’t be overlooked and when one Wedding Coach is tending to place settings, the other is dealing with the arrival of vendors and all other problems that creep up. From not enough flowers ordered to broken heels, no problem is left unsolved.”

Some people think wedding planning and coordination is an unnecessary expense, what are your thoughts on that?
“Rubbish! It is very important not to have your Mother, Aunt, Maids or friends set-up or help coordinate your wedding day – they should be next to you enjoying every moment. Hire a professional! We know budget can play a large factor in hiring a Wedding Coach that is why we offer so many different levels of service.”

If you had to plan a wedding in 3 months, how would you tackle that? Any advice for brides in that situation? “Planning a wedding in 3 months…my first piece of advice – Hire a Wedding Coach! After that, we will fast track the long list of tasks together and search for the perfect vendors & venue. If you are planning a summer wedding in 3 months, please keep in mind that most venues and vendors are booked 10-12 months prior to your date so your first choices might not be available. We won’t stop until we find you the perfect available vendors that suit your vision and budget.”

What is the easiest way to transform a room? Like if a bride can only afford to splurge on one major décor expense, what would it be and why?
“This all depends on the room. If the ceilings are high, you may want to keep your focus low and jazz up the tables with a colour or pattern linen. A trend you will see more of in 2013! Also, candles, candles, and more candles!!”

If you had one piece of advice for a bride and groom, what would it be?
Try to avoid leaning on your family and friends (friendors) to execute the wedding set-up/coordination, photograph the festivities or cook for the entire guest list. Hire a professional!!”
