Sahar Sarband and Daniela Gismondi are college friends turned entrepreneurs. Planning and organization seemed second nature to them so friends and family relied on them to be in charge of any party planning. From small get togethers to large community events, Sahar and Daniela tackled it all! Through this they realized what great chemistry they had and decided to start their own event planning company. Corporate events were their primary focus until they were at the helm of a few weddings. That’s when they realized that their true passion was giving their clients the perfect wedding day. They’ve been in the industry for 3 years now but have been planning various events for twice as long.

Modern Mint Events Inc. is a full service wedding planning company that can help with your event no matter what stage you are at. They offer full planning and day of coordination services and they have a special limited time offer just for my readers!

  • Day of Coordination services for $600 (for events with up to 100 guests) – regular starting price $1,200

A Few Words With Sahar & Daniela…

How do you accommodate brides with lower budgets?
“We specialize in working with different budgets. We have a large and close network of local vendors who accommodate different budgets and offer us special discounts. We also take budget planning and maintenance very seriously. We make sure our couples are comfortable with every spending decision and we never push them to go beyond that comfort level. Instead we offer more cost effective alternatives so they don’t feel that they are being deprived of an element they can’t afford. It’s very important for us that at the end of the day our couples are happy with their wedding on every level.”

What sets you apart from others in the same field?
“We’re from a new generation of planners who are not afraid to think and work outside of the box of typical planning practices. We don’t and never have been the types to stand around and give orders to venue staff. In fact, we like getting involved with every aspect and getting our hands dirty. We have done events where we’ve been the decorators, the set up staff, servers, Djs, MCs and the tear down staff in addition to our regular planning duties. We certainly have and will continue to go above and beyond to ensure our brides don’t worry about anything are happy, and enjoying their weddings. Brides trust us with the most important day of their lives, and we take that very very seriously.”

What do you enjoy most about your job?
“We love what we do. Every part of the job is exciting for a different reason even the stressful last few days. However, our favorites are the initial meeting with our excited couple where we get to know them and their vision and the end of the wedding day when we get to see the result of months of tireless effort. The wedding toasts and exchange of vows are also a couple of our favorites. It always makes us emotional.”

Where do you draw inspiration from when it comes to décor?
“Inspiration can come from anywhere from the season and the colours associated with it to the venue and the elements we can draw from it but most of all, our inspiration comes from the couple and their personalities. We believe weddings need to be a reflection of the couple and their unique style.”

How do you handle unforeseen problems on the wedding day? Can you give an example of a problem that you solved on the spot?
“We spend a considerable amount of time going through every possible scenario prior to the wedding and we do our very best to prepare for them all. It’s always much easier to prevent a problem than to react to it. We have an emergency wedding kit that includes items anyone may need during the day from tape and scissors to eyelash curlers to extra champagne glasses for the bridal party to chocolate bars for the brides who haven’t eaten all. We really do try to think of everything. We’ve had a wedding where the bridal party’s car has been stuck in snow on their way to the venue and we’ve driven for 45 minutes to shovel snow and get them out or the typical last minute wine spills on the white dress that we’ve managed to get out right before the panicked bride walk down the aisle. We’ve super glued shoes back together and kept the loud crying little ones busy during the day. During a couple of our other weddings, the bride’s bouquet fell apart during the ceremony and we managed to take what was left of them and create a bouquet they could cherish.”

Some people think wedding planning and coordination is an unnecessary expense, what are your thoughts on that?
“Many first time planners such as brides don’t realize that planning a wedding is a full time job. It brings on so much stress that couples tend to wear themselves out. Unless you have an army of help, you will need professional assistance and you don’t want to burden friends and family on the big day. Our services save you time, stress and money. We negotiate deals with your vendors and make sure your vision for the wedding becomes reality. Our brides claim our services are the best investment they have made for their wedding.”

What kind of venue is your favourite to decorate and why?
“We love outdoor venues. Our motto is Vancouver is the most beautiful background and outdoor venues are usually an open canvas and we can paint is as we want. This allows for more creativity and beautiful décor.”

If you had to plan a wedding in 3 months, how would you tackle that? Any advice for brides in that situation?
“If you’re faced with limited time we suggest finding your venue first and asap (preferably indoor so you won’t have to worry about the uncertain Vancouver weather and indoor venues usually have their own in-house staff and catering). Once you have your date and venue, you will find everything else gets built around that. Send out your invitations as soon as you have your date confirmed and order those dresses asap as alterations may take a while to complete. Make sure you work with vendors you can trust and always have a plan B for everything.”

What is the easiest way to transform a room?
“We have found lighting to be the most cost effective décor item and it has the most impact. We always suggest cutting elsewhere and adding to lighting such as spot lights for a bride on a budget. Lighting changes the feel of a room the way no floral arrangement or chair cover can.”

If you had one piece of advice for a bride and groom, what would it be?
“To hire a professional planner! We seriously can’t think of a better piece of advice!”
