Indie I Do Recap - January 28

I went to Indie I Do in 2010 while I was planning my wedding and I remember what a blast I had, so I knew I had to make it out this year and see what’s new in Vancouver’s Indie Wedding scene. I’m so glad I went… I saw lots of familiar faces, met new amazing people, plus immersed myself in a lot of new offbeat ideas for brides who just want that extra something that sets their big day apart. Oh and I found some deals too ;)

Some Highlights from the Show…

First of all, let’s talk about this spectacular brooch bouquet at the top of this page! That is Carmen West Creative‘s masterpiece – although not the most budget-friendly, she can customize a brooch and fabric flower bouquet for you for a cheaper, yet still unique alternative. Keep in mind too that this is not a bouquet you want to throw away. It can be worth the investment when you get to keep a piece of your wedding for the rest of your life! She also has a stunning collection of vintage fascinators, feather headbands, and assorted jewelry that are affordable (as you can see in the photo on the right side). Custom work is her forté so give her a call and she can help create that perfect accessory for you!

Say hello to Jenna from Revel Events – it’s her first ever wedding show but you wouldn’t know it after seeing her amazing booth! She is a wedding planner/DIY machine – her backdrop and flower centerpieces are made from streamers you can find at a dollar store. She clearly thinks outside the box! She offers a la carte assistance, day of coordination (starts at $700), partial and full planning services. Jenna’s one of the sweetest people you’ll ever meet and she’s excited to plan your special day!

So I finally found a DJ whose packages start BELOW $500. I met Drew of BCDJ.ca and he tells me their basic 4-hour package is only $299 and it comes with a 1500 Watt sound system, 2 Full Range Speakers, a Digital DJ Music System, and of course a DJ! Not too bad… you can always have a laptop or iPod on hand first during dinner and when the party starts later at night, the DJ can take over. Best of both worlds right?

If you are an environmentally conscious bride, you’ll love this. Something Green provides trendy and eco-friendly Save the Dates, wedding invitations, RSVP cards, and thank you cards. All are made from 100% recycled paper and organic-based wax inks. Most invitations are under $4/set and bulk discounts are also available. They have traditional designs, as well as cute & quirky ones like the one in this photo below.

These Shibang Designs bags caught my eye. Coloured wool is applied onto fabric to create a beautiful pop of colour. Pictured below are cosmetics cases (a good bridesmaid gift perhaps?) and they sell for $35 each. She also makes custom clutches, iPhone & iPad cases, wristlets, and wall art. Everything is handmade to order and the colours are customizable to your needs.

Lana Betty had the cutest earrings on display. She creates gorgeous vintage inspired jewelry and what she had on display were all less than $30 each! Very affordable gifts for bridesmaids, flower girls, or for any girl who loves Lana’s playful style. I also loved the cute little crochet ball earrings that she made… but the most adorable are the little owl earrings! I didn’t get a photo of them but check out her website to see them!

What’s your style? Glamour? Retro? Rock n Roll? Gothic? You’ll find exactly what you’re looking for at Diva! Boutique in Chilliwack. I loved all the funky hats and birdcage veils they had (made by ShiverZ Designs), not to mention the fab dresses they showed off during the fashion show. Custom work is available too, so get those creative juices flowing and they can help complete your unique look.

Loved seeing Caroline Calvert at Indie I Do. As usual I’m impressed with what she brought to the show. There were hair combs, necklaces and earrings handmade with freshwater pearls and crystals. Caroline also creates classy looking shrugs and boleros, great for keeping the shoulders warm during the colder months, like right now perhaps? :P She has an ongoing promotion: if you buy 3 or more of the same item, you’ll get a 10% discount.

I met a fabulous calligrapher named Laura Lavender. She even wrote my name out in the fancy way that she does. It turned out beautifully! She can create logos, monograms, illustrations, and even write out wedding invitations and address envelopes if you want to step up the elegance factor in your wedding.

Have you seen Marliss Productions’ new website? Isn’t it awesome? It was a great time for for a launch too, with their appearance at Indie I Do last weekend. One of their talented cinematographers, Kathy Marliss, was there sharing their Hollyood-style wedding films to future brides and grooms. She told me that they are currently working on new packages that would interest more budget-minded couples. You’ll have to talk to them to find out more about it!

I tried a delicious chocolate and caramel cake sample by cake designer Kien Nguyen of Kien & Sweet. She had an elaborate sweet table prepared with a variety of cakes, cake pops, and macaron trees. Not only are her cakes delicious but they are so appealing to look at. If you’re interested in a custom wedding cake, her prices start at $6/serving but for a more accurate quote you’ll have to have a chat with her! She’s looking forward to hearing your ideas.

Whew… that was a lot. That was just a fraction of what went on at Indie I Do. There were bellydance performances and fashion shows happening throughout the day, plus many more vendors to see and meet. It was a packed show with lots of great options for all types of brides. Blue Olive Photography & Lotus Events did a fantastic job of putting together this event… thank you so much for having me and hope to come back next year!

It was a great event. It was my first year attending and I enjoyed meeting all the vendors and checking out the new and creative trends this year. Although i’m not a bride, was 7 years ago, I wanted to plan my wedding again as I was walking through and looking at all the uniques ideas. I went to network with other vendors, as I specialize in custom Candy Buffets, and they were so warm and friendly. Kathy from Marliss productions actually captured my event, and did a fantastic job! can’t wait to see whats happneing next year! The venue was very unique to the event.

I am so thankful to be featured in your blog! The Indie I Do was my first bridal show of what I hope to be many more in the future! I am a bride-to-be as well and enjoyed being able to participate as both a vendor and potential customer with the other businesses at the show! Cheers to a great post and a great show!
