Veil Show Recap – April 17

April 18th, 2011 by Jeannine

I have nothing but good things to say about this show. It didn’t even feel like a wedding show, I felt like I was just mingling, meeting new friends and enjoying the occasional canape. It was quite nice. The beautiful banquet room at the Shangri-La wasn’t too shabby either with its gorgeous chandeliers and covered patio, a breath of fresh air from other venues I’ve seen. I was warmly greeted by show organizer, Kathy Marliss, and almost immediately offered a refreshment by one of the friendly waitresses. It definitely had a no-pressure atmosphere, it was more like an informative cocktail party :) I met a lot of great people yesterday and I’m here to share with you what they have to offer for low budget brides :)

Caroline Calvert Couture

Caroline Calvert is a local designer who creates wedding dresses, jewelry, veils and other accessories. She does custom work for brides as well, simply contact her and let her know how much you can afford and she’ll work with you to design an accessory made just for you. She also offers a 10% discount if you order any 3 items from her inventory. A style tip from Caroline: feathers, flowers, and birdcage veils are in right now!

Elite Limousine

The owner of Elite Limousine tells me that if you book any of their stretch limos on Fridays, Sundays, or a Saturday during non-peak season (October to April), they only require a minimum booking of 2 hours. A big savings, especially if you don’t need a limo for that long anyway.

Flower Factory

To help lower costs, the Flower Factory has an option for you to order loose flowers that you can arrange yourself in centrepieces or even your own bouquets. They showcased their work at the Veil Show, check out the beautiful arrangements on this table setting (linens and other decor provided by Delovely Creative).

Images by Bethany

Images by Bethany’s starting prices are around $3000 but she includes a new service that I haven’t seen offered by a photographer I’ve come across so far. Each couple gets their own personal flash website, which she puts together after your engagement photos are done. These wedsites are modeled after her homepage except it only showcases your photos, your love story, and whatever information you want on the site regarding your wedding, as long as you provide Bethany the text for it :) It’s a neat add-on and definitely adds more value to the investment. Here’s a sample she did for a couple.

Isabelle’s Bridal

For those who haven’t found a dress yet, I strongly suggest you book an appointment at Isabelle’s Bridal for next weekend… why? They’re having a big sale, 50% off the last ticketed price! They say you may even find a dress for $50! They also tell me that they beat other stores’ prices, so it will help to call them in advance, you might get a better deal.

Magmories

Magmories (magnetic memories) work on-site at your wedding taking candid photos and printing them on magnets on the spot, having them available for your guests to take home at the end of the night. Sort of like a photobooth, but not really. It’s like having a photographer for the reception and party favours rolled into one. Call them up and let them know you saw them at the Veil Show and they’ll give you a $100 off the package you book. It’s only valid this week, so hurry!

Magnolia Photographic

Magnolia Photographic’s Laura Millin can create custom packages for lower budget brides on non-peak days (Monday-Thursday)… something to consider if you’re having a weekday wedding and want a top notch photographer for less.

Marie Antoinette Cakes

Estelle from Marie Antoinette Cakes advises me that fake cakes don’t necessarily come cheaper because you’re still paying for the time it takes to decorate a multi-tiered cake. A good tip and a good reason for brides to really consider all options before committing, maybe you can afford a real cake after all?

Milestone Events

I met Cailyn from Milestone Events and it was clear that the company was passionate about making your event look unique and beautiful. She informed me that a rental catalog will be available soon on their website so if you don’t need Milestone Events’ help, you can at least borrow their stuff and decorate your way!

Nadia Albano Makeup

Nadia Albano is not only a makeup artist, she is also the program coordinator for VCC’s Makeup Artistry Certificate Program. You don’t need to go to VCC to learn from her though, she also offers private and group makeup lessons at her studio. A 3 hour group lesson costs $100 per person for a minimum of 4 people. Her advice for budget brides is to invest in a makeup lesson if you decide to do your own makeup for the wedding, because it’s a skill you can take with you your whole life, not just the wedding day. If you’re curious, her preferred products are Makeup Forever, NARS, Laura Mercier, and MAC.

Photobooth Vancouver

Here’s an incentive to book early. If you book a 3 hour package with Photobooth Vancouver 12 months in advance, you get the 4th hour free. This includes unlimited photos, an attendant, setup, teardown, and you get to keep a disc with all the photos taken that night.

Uniquity Invitations

You may remember my post about Uniquity Invitations from a month ago. They had a Groupon deal, but obviously that’s been expired for a long time. Invitation designer Tammy Lyon tells me to keep an eye out on another group buy site called WedOBO. It’s primarily an American group buy site but they will be coming out with a national deal and hers will be one of them. Otherwise, all her templates cost $79 and include pretty much all the coordinating stationery designs you need for your wedding.

My only regrets for this show… not having enough time to hang out, not being able to eat as much, and missing out on meeting Jeanette from Delovely Creative. There will be other shows, though, and I hope to be attending them :) Again, I’d like to thank Kathy and Steph  from Marliss Productions for organizing this event and the Shangri-La Hotel for hosting it. It was a pleasure meeting everyone and thank you all for sharing your knowledge, advice, and deals with Vancity Bride readers. Hope to see you all again! :)
