Vancity Vendor: The Borrowed Collection

Elise McClain is no stranger to making women look good for the big day. For the last 6 years she spent her time at one of Vancouver’s top bridal boutiques helping brides find their dream gowns and accessories to match. She decided to go on another direction and with that she brought a new and unique service to Vancouver. She opened The Borrowed Collection, a bridal jewelry rental service. I love this idea, why spend hundreds of dollars on wedding jewelry if it’s unlikely that you’ll wear it again? Instead, you pay a fraction of the cost and have the look you want on your big day.

The Borrowed Collection has been around for just a few months and carry a wide variety of accessories including necklaces, earrings, headpieces, bracelets and belts. They have a growing list of designers, among them are Jenny Packham, Ben-Amun, and Jennifer Behr. They keep their rental pricing reasonable with rates starting from $24-40 depending on the category, and sash rentals starting at $60. Brides will have the items for 3-5 days, depending on the level of shipping chosen. Vancouver brides have the option to pick up their order on Thursdays. If you’re a destination bride and require the item longer, feel free to contact them to discuss details. Consultations are held by appointment at a fellow Vancity Vendor’s space, the Soirée Lounge in Yaletown. Here are the available times when you can set up a meeting. Get on their VIP mailing list to receive special promotions and event announcements. Their inventory is always expanding and have plans to add veils and possibly jeweled boleros to the list. A Few Words With Elise…

Where do you source out jewelry?
“I personally have a few designers that I truly love and so I began there. After that, we searched the globe to find jewelry that brides will love and made our selections with one thing in mind: Do we love it? If the answer was yes, we added it to our collection!”

What do you look for when you’re shopping for new pieces to add to the inventory? What qualities does it need to have to make the cut?
“This is a great question because all fashion jewelry is not created equally! The quality of the stone is very important when it comes to having pieces that will really sparkle, so it was important to make sure that either Swarovski crystal or cubic zirconia stones were used. We also made sure that quality metal findings, such as plated rhodium and sterling silver were used.”

Why do you think this is a good solution for brides on a budget?
“I think this is a good solution for all brides, but especially for those on a budget! Wedding jewelry is such a wonderful way to express your personal style on your wedding day and complete your overall look, but it can be hard to spend money hundreds of dollars on pieces that you may not have a chance to wear again. By using our service, brides can have the exact look that they want, wear and love their jewelry, and return it when the day is over at a fraction of the retail value.”

What sets you apart from others in the same field?
“We like to think that we are carving our own path in the Canadian wedding industry! In fact, to date, we are Canada’s only online bridal jewelry rental company. The wonderful thing about being the first is that there are no rules and that allows us to be flexible and change with the valuable feedback from our brides.”

How do you determine what look is best for each person?
“I think that everything about your wedding day should be an expression of your personality and help people select wedding jewelry with that in mind. For instance, if a bride is fun loving and a little bit quirky, I steer her away from the traditional! I watch for excitement on someone’s face or a twinkle in their eye because there is always a little sparkle when people are wearing something they love.”

If a client wants a certain style but you can tell it doesn’t make them look great, how would you deal with that situation?
“This is an interesting question because taste in jewelry and personal style in general is very subjective. It’s true that ‘beauty is in the eye of the beholder’! I try to remove my personal style and instead really listen to what the bride is about, then guide her from that point of view. At the same time, if a bride expresses that she feels lost and would prefer an expert opinion, I rely on my personal style in those situations.”

What is your favourite bridal look and why?
“I love the combination of earrings, a bracelet, and a headpiece because the combination offers a little sparkle from every angle! I like to remind brides that wedding jewelry should have a 360 approach because it isn’t just about the way you look when you see yourself in the mirror. There is also the side view while you are saying your vows, the back view as you walk down the aisle, and every other angle as you dance your first dance.”

What do you enjoy most about your job?
“I love everything that sparkles (of course!), but mostly I love helping brides express their individuality. Every bride, and wedding for that matter, is unique, amazing, and special. You can hold countless weddings at the same venue, or have a number of brides wear the same dress and no two weddings are the same after you add in all of the personal touches!”

If you had one piece of advice for a bride and groom, what would it be?
“Do what you truly want! The two people that matter most on your wedding day is you and twenty years from now, you will be the ones looking at the wedding photos so make sure you choose what you love.” (Click the photo to rent the comb, here are the earrings.)
