Carmen believes that the relationship between a bride and her makeup artist is very important. She says that she makes the most of the consultation process by finding out everything that the bride likes and doesn’t like to get a better feel for her personality and style. She likes to keep consultations light and fun, like you’re just hanging out with an old friend sharing stories and having a laugh. A Few Words With Carmen…

What brands of products do you like to use? Why did you choose them?
“I use a lot of different brands of products, Some of my favourites include Makeup Forever, Nars, MAC, Smashbox, CHANEL and Armani. They all provide amazing quality (long lasting), good pigment and colours.  For a bride who needs her makeup to last all day 12+ hours I choose brands that keep up to their word and won’t let me down.”

What do you have to offer for brides with lower budgets?
“I offer a hair and makeup service which tailors to their budget.  I know there are brides who are on a budget who are not able to spend a lot of money on their wedding, what I do is take their budget and arrange an affordable makeup and hair package which still gives them an amazing beauty experience from me.”

What sets you apart from others in the same field?
“I have traveled much of the world and lived in Asia for a while. Experiencing different cultures and lifestyles has opened up my eyes on different makeup techniques that may differ from North American makeup styles. I take cultural preference and their personal experience into consideration.”

How do you determine what look is best for each person?
“All clients are different. They have different face shapes, skin tones, and of course personal preference.  During the initial consultation or at the trial, I ask them to bring reference pictures of what they desire and what looks they do not want. With their ideas of hair and makeup  and my expertise I create a look that they want and what also will look great on the wedding date.”

If a client wants a certain style but you can tell it doesn’t make them look great, how would you deal with that situation?
“I would try the look at the trial and let them see what it looks like, however I would also give them another option or 2 to think about. I would also give them my opinion but overall it is their decision.”

What do you enjoy most about your job?
“I love being able to watch a transformation that happens to clients from the moment they sit in my makeup chair, it is very rewarding as their day completely changes.  I have had clients email me after trials saying I did not want to take my makeup off, It was amazing! It’s these little things that make my job very rewarding.”

If you had one piece of advice for a bride and groom, what would it be?
“My advice would be relax, enjoy your time and try not to stress too much! (I know that one is hard), but this day happens only once (knock on wood). Just enjoy everything that is going to happen to you on this gorgeous day!”
