Vancity Vendor: Denise Elliott Makeup Artist

Dancer-turned-makeup artist, Denise Elliott, found her stride while working at the Bobbi Brown makeup counter at Holt Renfrew. There she met many brides who wanted that perfect bridal look. She found inspiration through her bridal work and realized her true passion, making women feel glamourous without losing their natural beauty.

Her makeup rates start at $120 and include false lashes, use of high quality luxury makeup by Bobbi Brown, Laura Mercier, Giorgio Armani, and more, as well as travel within Vancouver, Burnaby, and North Shore. Trials and travel to further areas cost extra, contact Denise for a more accurate wedding quote. A Few Words With Denise…

What brands of products do you like to use? Why did you choose them?
“There are so many makeup brands it’s definitely hard to have a specific favourite. I love makeup and finding new products out on the market! My main products I use in my kit are Bobbi Brown, Laura Mercier, Girogio Armani Cosmetics, Stila and Smashbox. I always use the Armani Luminous Silk Foundation on brides, there is no other foundation that compares, and it’s honestly the best! All of these brands are great quality makeup and extremely long wearing for the day! They cover well, but yet look so fresh and natural on the skin.”

What do you have to offer for brides with lower budgets?
“I’m very flexible and would be more than happy to accommodate the bridal party’s budget. Please contact me for more information on my rate list.”

What sets you apart from others in the same field?
“I think this is a great question. I would say my personality and skills as a makeup artist really set me apart from others in the industry. Every bride still wants to look like themselves but the most beautiful they can on their wedding day. I’m very easygoing and really listen to each bride as to what they picture themselves looking like for their big day. Also, working in the retail industry for as long as I did (6 years) made me gain knowledge of many different techniques from each brand, Laura Mercier, Bobbi Brown, Nars and Giorgio Armani, and I also had the opportunity to work with top international artists from those lines. I think it’s so important to keep myself updated on the ever so changing industry and up to date with all the new products and techniques.”

How do you determine what look is best for each person?
“Every client has such different face shapes, skin tone and eye colour. I would start by asking them what their regime is for their everyday makeup routine and depending if they wear much makeup we will go from there. I want to make sure everyone is comfortable in the makeup and I always explain what I’m applying on her face. Many brides learn tips and tricks from our consultation too!”

If a client wants a certain look but you can tell it doesn’t make them look great, how would you deal with that situation?
“I would simply explain to the client there are other looks that would look great too. I would mainly focus on the positive and focus on nothing negative. Suggesting other options are always good and the bride may not perhaps be aware of other looks.”

What do you enjoy most about your job?
“Oh this is a tough question! I love what I do; being a makeup artist I absolutely love the final look when the bride or bridesmaid look into the mirror once we just finished the makeup application. I can’t describe that feeling of gratitude and happiness I get when I see the bride so happy and delighted!”

What should your clients expect when they have their bridal consultation with you?
“The most important step before your special day will be to complete a stress-free personalized makeup consultation to create the perfect look you have always envisioned. I recommend meeting for the trial when you have somewhere to go afterwards, since you will be all dolled up! Many previous brides have booked their engagement photos on the trial day. I always recommend bringing any makeup clip outs from magazines that you like, this will make sure we both can envision the same look. The trial typically takes an hour and a half.  My expertise and skill ensures we will create a classic and radiant look creating beauty that’s naturally you!”

If you had one piece of advice for a bride and groom, what would it be?
“I would say enjoy the day as much as you can together. It’s amazing how much planning, time and lead up goes into the wedding and I can’t stress enough to just really enjoy every moment on your wedding as it goes by so quickly!”
