Vancity Vendor: Gems Hair and Makeup

Gemma Spierings - Gems Hair and Makeup Gemma Spierings is no stranger to the wedding industry, having been a successful wedding planner for many years before shifting her sights to the world of bridal beauty. She has worked on at least 200 weddings (and counting) in 10 years… 4 of those years as a mobile hair and makeup artist. Gem received training in Vancouver, as well as Asia, which allowed her to learn new techniques in order to work well with different ethnicities. With ample knowledge and experience, she took a chance and started her own company, a chance that has proven to be a smart decision.

Gems Hair and Makeup provides mobile hair styling and makeup services. Their bridal package starting rate is quite affordable at $150 for both hair and makeup. They also do hair and makeup for engagement shoots, graduations, and other special occasions, with rates starting at $95. Gemma says they offer promotions from time to time, which you can find on their website. You can also follow them on Facebook and Twitter to keep up to date with their latest work.

A Few Words With Gemma…

Gems Hair and Makeup - photo by Sherri M Photography What brands of products do you like to use? Why did you choose them?
“Our kits vary quite a bit in brands.  I have done a lot of product testing and research to find what brands I think works best for each product.  The key element I look for in a product is long lasting! When you are doing makeup and hair for weddings you need it to last through wind, sweat, dancing or whatever that day may bring. After all we live in Vancouver, your wedding day will be unpredictable! Some brands to name would be Mac, Makeup Forever and Urban Decay.”

What do you have to offer for brides with lower budgets?
“We offer some great group rates for brides with lower budgets, and a very affordable trial price.  A trial is super important because it allows us to get to know you a little bit, and come up with the perfect look. Building that relationship is what allows you to feel comfortable and confident on your big day.”

“We have the option of a naturally based makeup line to use on our clients if requested.  This is great for people with sensitive skin, allergies or who do not like the feel of makeup on their face.  There is nothing worse than having a reaction on a special day like your wedding.  Having clean, safe products brings down the chance of a reaction significantly!”

How do you determine what look is best for each person?
“I determine the best look for a person by getting to know their style, and learning details on the occasion they are getting dolled up for.  By having a conversation about what styles they like, what they wear on a regular basis, how they want to feel like once I am done, what makeup products they like best, I can come up with a look that they not only love but feel comfortable in and works for the occasion.”

“Ultimately, the client is the one who will be wearing her look all day! If I don’t think a certain style will look great on them, of course I offer suggestions, however everyone has their own style.  My ultimate goal is that they feel beautiful and comfortable when I am finished with them.  As long as they feel great and love their look than I know my job is done!”

What is your favourite bridal look and why?
“This really is a tough question! There are way too many bridal looks that I love. I tend to do a more natural look, however when requested I love to try something new and dramatic.  I think it is important that when your husband-to-be sees you for the first time he recognizes you. It’s just the best, put together version of you!  I do love incorporating things like braids, twists and all that fun stuff when it comes to hairstyles.  I am also a big fan of extensions, the more hair the better!”

“There are so many parts of this job that I love.  Hands down though, just getting to be a part of someone’s big day is what I enjoy most. It is the biggest day of their life and they chose and trusted me to help them look and feel their best. It is one amazing feeling!”

If you had one piece of advice for a bride and groom, what would it be?
“My one piece of advice for a bride and groom would be to just relax and enjoy the day! You’ve spent so much time on making it amazing; it is your day so embrace every moment.  Little unexpected things may happen, just keep in mind no one else notices but you.  Remember that in the end people are there to share this once in a lifetime occasion that celebrates your love for each other!”
