Kelsey Dickson knew she wanted to be a makeup artist right from the get go. She had a love for fashion, beauty and art, and makeup has always been an interest of hers so of course this career was a great fit for her. After years of doing makeup for her high school’s theatre productions, she pursued formal training at Blanche Macdonald, and later on with prestigious labels such as Lancome, Chanel, and MAC. She made things happen for herself, including starting her own mobile makeup artistry business, which she has been doing for the last 6 years.

Kelsey Dickson has been providing mobile makeup services to over 100 brides so far, and the number keeps growing each year. Bridal rates are $100, and for the bridal party, the cost decreases when there is more people: $85 for 1, $75 each for 2-3 people, and $65 each for 4+ people. These include false lashes as well. She offers makeup consultations for $45 and Kelsey will try on as many looks on the bride to determine which is the perfect look on her. She will spend time to get to know the bride and ask questions about how she normally wears her makeup, what looks she’s comfortable with and, of course, what looks she want to avoid. Kelsey’s future plans with her business is to eventually offer hairstyling too. Check out her Facebook page to keep tabs on any updates she may have, or even promotions, because that’s where she’ll be announcing them.

A Few Words With Kelsey…

What brands of products do you like to use and why did you choose them?
“Oh my goodness, I like to use so many different brands!  I’m a bit of a make up junkie!  I use a lot of Stila,MAC, Chanel, Smashbox, Nars, Lancome, Benefit, & Glo Minerals. Every brand has something great to offer.  I love working with Stila eyeshadows, especially on my brides. They blend beautifully and the colors are so soft and appealing.  I also love using Glo Minerals’ ‘Mineral Powder Foundation.’  It’s great for the skin, as it provides such a flawless finish without looking cakey or heavy, even on those with sensitive skin.”

What do you have to offer for brides with lower budgets?
“I understand that sometimes budgets can be tight for some brides, so I’ll definitely be as accommodating as possible.  I also offer discounted rates to those requiring a greater number of people.”

What sets you apart from others in the same field?
“I think everyone has their own unique style of applying make up, I know I definitely have mine.  I tend to be softer handed than some other artists, as many of my clients expressed how gentle their make up application was.  I always try to accommodate my clients, find what they are comfortable with, and ultimately how they want to look. It’s easy to go ahead and generally apply one’s make up, however I find a certain look to one person can be interpreted completely differently by another. I am a very calm person by nature, so I try to ensure my clients feel relaxed.  I am also always on time!”

What do you enjoy most about your job?
“I love how every experience is different.  I’m fortunate to often meet interesting new people. I love having the ability to bring out confidence in my clients, and make them feel like a million bucks just by doing their make up!  There is nothing more fun than helping to prepare a bride for the most memorable, and exciting day of her life!”

What should your clients expect when they have their bridal consultation with you?
They should expect to have fun, and hopefully learn a few make up tricks too!  I don’t ever want someone to feel rushed during a consultation; I’ll always take as much time as needed. With each consultation I like to start by examining a number of reference photos with the client. We then try out a number of different colors and looks until they are 100% happy.  We’ll talk and cover all the details of the wedding, like what her dress will look like, what kind of accessories she’ll use, how she plans to wear her hair, if the ceremony is indoors or outdoors etc.  We’ll also go over skin care and ensure we’re using products that will work with her skin type.”

If you had one piece of advice for a bride and groom, what would it be?
“To relax and enjoy the day because it goes by fast!”
