Vancity Vendor: Makeup by Ariana

Ariana Quashie - Makeup by Ariana Ariana Quashie is a MAC Addict… and I’m not talking about computers here. As a teenager, you’d always find her at the MAC counter checking for the latest and greatest, experimenting with new products, and looking to add to her ever growing makeup collection. She was a regular and eventually got to know the manager and the Artists who worked there. When the holidays rolled around, she was hired to be a seasonal cashier, and during her time there, she learned a lot about the industry. She was promoted to an Artist 9 months later at the Pro store and after 12 years, she started her very own freelance business on the side. She’s still loving every moment of it.

Makeup by Ariana provides mobile makeup services for brides, fashion shoots, and other special occasions. Bridal makeup costs $150 and includes lashes and a brand new full sized MAC lipstick that the bride can keep for touch-ups. Bridesmaid makeup is $90 each and includes lashes. Trial rates are extra and depend on each quote, contact Ariana to inquire!

A Few Words With Ariana…

What brands of products do you like to use? Why did you choose them?
“I mainly use all MAC products because they have a fantastic line of long wear products specifically designed to last all day, they are perfect for weddings.  I feel very confident using the products because I know them inside out and I also use them on myself everyday, so I know how they wear and show up on camera, in photos, etc.”

“I try to be as flexible as I can because I know how expensive weddings can be, being a previous bride myself, I know how quickly everything adds up.  I try to be sensitive to people’s budgets especially if they have a larger wedding party.”

What sets you apart from others in the same field?
“I would definitely say my 12 years of experience in the industry and my upbeat and cheerful nature.  But aside from all that, my training that I’m constantly getting from work, doing makeup everyday in one of the busiest makeup stores really makes you a pro when working on all different ethnicities daily.  It also keeps me up to date with all the new techniques and trends for the upcoming seasons as well as new products and tools.  At the Pro store we work closely with our Senior Artist who works Fashion Week in NY, London, Milan, and Paris. When she comes back she shares all the backstage tips and tricks for the shows so I know all the secrets!”

“I ask a lot of questions during the trial to try and collaborate with the brides to create a look that will suit their style.  I observe their features, eye and hair colour. I ask them what they want the focus to be? Eyes, lips, cheeks, skin?  How comfortable they are with makeup on a day to day basis? I also ask them about their personal style as well as the style of wedding.  All these questions play an important role of what’s going to work best for them on the wedding day.  Lastly, the bride’s personal comfort level is the determining factor of what I end up creating for her. She will be the one to wear the look in the end and it’s my goal to make sure that she feels confident and beautiful when she walks down the aisle on her biggest day.”

If a client wants a certain style but you can tell it doesn’t .make them look great, how would you deal with that situation?
“Most of the brides that seek me out, come to me because they’ve seen my work and like my style of makeup, so when we meet for a trial they usually refer to a makeup  that I’ve already done and want a similar if not the same look.  But the odd time that I am put in a situation like that I try to talk it through with the bride.  I make suggestions of what I think would work well and explain why.  I often find the brides trust me enough to let me show them why another style may work better and in the end they usually agree.”

“Hmmmm, this is tough question! There are so many different looks that I like for different reasons.  For a timeless look with a more modern feel, I love a soft neutral eye with a classic black eye liner and full false lashes with a pretty-warm pink lip or for bolder brides a matte red lip with a touch of gloss. Regardless the look, I always make sure the skin is flawless and glowing.”

What do you enjoy most about your job?
“Meeting all the amazing brides and their friends and family, you really develop a friendship and you become more than just the makeup artist. I have such a strong love and passion for all things wedding, I truly take pride in my work and I love being  part of such an important day.  For me, it’s not just a job it’s doing something that I love and have so much fun with.”

If you had one piece of advice for a bride and groom, what would it be?
“Enjoy every moment that you can of the wedding planning and try to do as much as you can together!  Not only will it make you closer but when your wedding day finally arrives you will both appreciate the results so much more knowing the amount of the work it took to get there!”
