Atefeh Shojaie - photo by K Timmins Photography Meet my latest Vancity Vendor, freelance makeup artist Atefeh Shojaie. Atefeh is well immersed in the wedding industry in Kelowna and Vancouver, with 10 years and hundreds of weddings under her makeup brush belt. She worked for Estée Lauder for almost two years before switching over to MAC Costmetics, where she has been working ever since. She has gained a wealth of knowledge, thanks to their ongoing training and is quite comfortable working with people with different ethnicities. At the same time, she constantly keeps up to date with the latest trends in fashion and beauty, which she then applies into her daily work.

Makeup by Atefeh offers mobile makeup services for weddings and other special occasions. The starting rate for bridal makeup packages is $150, which includes lashes. For the bridal party, it will be $80 per person, including lashes. Trials and travel are an additional cost. Atefeh also has an exclusive offer for Vancity Bride readers:

A Few Words With Atefeh…

Makeup by Atefeh What brands of products do you like to use? Why did you choose them?
“95% percent of my kit is MAC. Over the years of working at MAC I’ve found that as much as it is fun to explore other brands I have found MAC offers great quality products that work for all types of ethnicities and that most of my clients are already familiar with MAC cosmetics. MAC offers a great selection of long lasting colors and textures that work well on camera.”

What do you have to offer for brides with lower budgets?
“Recently being a bride myself I understand the costs associated with having a wedding, so I’m very sensitive to that. I am open to discussing budgets and also offer group discounts.”

Makeup by Atefeh What sets you apart from others in the same field?
“I know that what sets me a part is that I have all the qualities a bride is looking for; Someone who is reliable, honest, compassionate, personable, resourceful and professional but also is unique in their artistry. My 12 years of expertise and calm demeanor puts brides at ease, that’s one thing crossed off their list.”

How do you determine what look is best for each person?
“I ask a lot of questions during our trial which is vital. During a trial I will ask about what type of wedding they are having, about “the dress”, hair, and the theme of the wedding and of course I can’t forget to take into consideration the brides’ eye color, and facial features. Essentially I want to know what kind of bride they want to be.. As a bride you are telling a story and the makeup she wears is an important piece. I also ask for reference pictures to be sure what the bride is visualizing and the sense of the look, and then I customize the look to each bride. If a client wants a certain style but you can tell it doesn’t make them look great, how would you deal with that situation? This situation is rare but when it does I keep a positive vibe and give them a few options and explain why the alternative look may be better for them and for the most part they agree and trust my expertise.”

“Well, there are a few that I love on different skin tones and ethnicities. I generally love timeless classic looks. One of my favorite is a soft smoky eye with perfected dewy skin and finished with peachy pink cheeks and lips. I love this look because it’s all about the eyes and the overall look is fresh. I also love classics like a bold cherry red lips with winged out eyeliner and lots of lashes. I love it because it’s definitely a statement look.”

What do you enjoy most about your job?
“What I enjoy the most about my job is simply creating and meeting new clients. To be part of such a special time in someone’s life is such an honor and so rewarding to see a bride on the day of her wedding when all the pieces of puzzle finally come together. The love, the energy, the laughter is what I thrive on.”

“My brides to be should expect an open fun relaxing time during their consultation with me. My outgoing personality puts my clients at ease. We start by talking about the overall feel of the wedding and determine the style of the makeup look. My goal is to always give my clients a fun, interactive relaxing experience.”

If you had one piece of advice for a bride and groom, what would it be?
“My advice to future brides and grooms is to choose your vendors wisely. Invest in a videographer, it’s so worth it.  As stressful as the planning can be try to savor every moment and always remind yourselves of the big picture, which is the union of each other. On the wedding day be sure to have your favorite breakfast and take deep breaths and let go and enjoy the ride.”
