Ella Ma is a veteran in the fashion industry, having been in the business for over 20 years. She started in Hong Kong and when she immigrated to Canada, she decided to switch it up and get into the bridal business instead. It was only 6 years ago, that she opened her cute little bridal store on #3 Road called Mia Boutique, where you’ll find outfits for everyone in the wedding party, except the men… although she does have little tuxes for ringbearers in stock!

Mia Boutique has lots to offer for low budget brides since most of the wedding dresses in stock are priced under $1600, and even some for under $500. Bridesmaid dresses range between $159-$250 and flower girl dresses for under $100. You may even get a discount if you buy 3 or more dresses! She carries a variety of designers like Ella Rosa, Sophia Tolli Special Occasion, Bari Jay, and l o v e by ENZOANI, just to name a few, but she’s got her eye on some upcoming lines so watch for some new additions to the designer list on her website. All her dresses may be bought off the rack so, in a time crunch, a bride can have a dress that same day.

A bridal appointment typically lasts an hour. Ella will find out her bride’s budget and help choose dresses that will flatter her body type. She says she’s confident she can choose the right style for each body type because of her extensive experience in the fashion industry, a big help to those who can’t figure out which dress to choose. After finding the right dress, it’s time to accessorize! Ella can help you choose a veil, tiara, headband, belt or sash that will complement and complete your bridal look. She recommends ordering dresses well in advance because it takes around 6 months to arrive. Alterations are available at Mia Boutique, they have their own seamstress and recommends her clients to come back for an alteration fitting one month before the big day. To give you an idea, a hem on a basic, simple straight skirt will cost aroung $50-100. Alteration prices always depend on the dress so be sure to ask for a quote.

A Few Words With Ella…

How do you choose which designers to sell?
“I think it’s the look, there must be something I like first, the design and the price… I like something more simple but still have the bridal drama. I like something more elegant. I see there’s an elegant simple design, it has to be feminine, that’s something I require, a dress should have that element.”

What do you enjoy most about this job?
“I enjoy the moment, when their faces are so happy when they’ve found their dress… when the mom just cries like what you see in Say Yes To The Dress, it really happens! Sometimes the bride in the fitting room, once she puts on the gown, her expression and everything is so happy.”

How do you accommodate brides who need a dress right away?
“Just find something off the rack, you will find more size 4-10 in my store. If you are between those sizes it will be easier to find something off the rack.”

If you could pick one dress that would make the biggest impact for an affordable price, which would it be?
“The Alfred Angelo 850 ($1495). I really love the details. When somebody does a top like that, they usually have a very big, pouffy skirt, but I like this one, how it’s simple. It’s a gorgeous gown.”

What piece of advice do you have for a bride who’s shopping for a wedding dress?
“Just like looking for your boyfriend, you don’t have to date everyone to find out who will be your husband, if you find a dress that you like then go for it, don’t think ‘oh what if I see something better?’ Some people think that way and they would never end shopping for the gown until the last minute, and they end up very confused. Don’t bring too many family and friends to an appointment because opinions will be so different and you’ll end up pleasing them but not pleasing yourself.”

What one piece of advice do you have for the bride and groom?
“Always plan ahead, don’t do something in the very last minute.”
