Vancity Vendor: Mirror Mirror Bijoux

Pamela Chang loves making jewelry, in fact she’s been doing it for 20 years! She left her corporate job to raise her son and eventually took this opportunity to become an entrepreneur. She is passionate about creating bridal jewelry that is unique and fashionable, as well as affordable, and Mirror Mirror Bijoux was born.

Mirror Mirror Bijoux specializes in bridal and event jewelry. She describes her style as “vintage inspired with a twist” and uses materials such as pearls, crystal, semi-precious stones, glass, silver, silver plate, rhodium plate, gold plate, and vintage parts she’s collected to craft her pieces. To give you an idea, here are a few of her average prices:

  • Custom necklace – $150
  • Pre-designed bridal necklaces – $80 to $170 bundled w/ matching pair of basic earrings
  • Bracelet – $50 to $95
  • Earrings – $35 to $75

Her goal is to provide bridal options for under $200 and she will be able to work with you to design something you’ll love for what you can afford. Just keep in mind that the amount and type of material used, as well as the complexity of the design, can increase the cost of the jewelry. Pamela also makes multifunctional jewelry such as her Collette necklace. It’s a 5-strand pearl necklace with a decorative brooch that can be broken down into several elements that can be worn separately after. You’re technically paying 1 price for 5 different necklaces! Another perk… anyone who spends over $50 gets a free gift!

Pamela requires 6 to 8 weeks to create a custom bridal piece but can work within a shorter time frame if possible. Each jewelry comes with its own polishing cloth and gift wrapped, which is great if you’re thinking of buying her items for your bridesmaids. If you love what Mirror Mirror Bijoux has to offer, check out their Facebook page, follow them on Twitter, or set up an appointment to meet her and see her jewelry for yourself! She’s flexible with meeting times and places but appointments are required.

A Few Words With Pamela…

Where do you get inspiration for your designs?
“Wedding dresses, vintage jewelry, vintage fashion photography, period movies, iconic fashion houses that create a lot of bold but classic statement pieces.”

How do you keep up with jewelry trends?
“Primarily media however since we do more vintage inspired designs I’m less concerned with trends in jewelry but I do find keeping up with wedding dress trends to be more key so I know what kind of necklines, shapes, colours, ornamentation are popular from season to season.”

Where can customers find your jewelry for sale?
“Our pieces are available online at www.mirrormirrorbijoux.com with select pieces available at Isabelle’s Bridal (North Vancouver), Scout Boutique (Vancouver), Brick and Mortar (New Westminster), Luxe Beauty Lounge (Yaletown), The Bride’s Closet (Nanaimo).”

What do you have to offer to brides with lower budgets?
“We welcome any client who wants something original that is NOT massed produced. If you have a lower budget we have no problem with working within those parameters to still create something special that enhances your bridal ensemble. Our Crystal Cube Earrings add a very sophisticated touch of sparkle and are only $20/pair. We can also offer package pricing if the bride is purchasing multiple pieces (3 or more either for herself and/or bridal party) which is on average about 10% – 15% discount off the regular price.”

If a bride needs jewelry in a short period of time, how do you accommodate that?
“We do our best to accommodate however depending on what is being ordered sometimes there is a minimum amount of time required.  We can usually find a way to meet the needs of a rush order and will only add a surcharge if we have to (such as having to pay for a key component to be expedited to us).  We always have some pieces that are ready to go and are flexible with making modifications to these to suit the client if needed.”

What jewelry would you suggest that would make the biggest impact on a small budget?
“Two options come to mind – for those who like pearls I would definitely say a pearl necklace since they are so timeless and you’ll be able to wear them again and again (we have our Pretty in Pearls that uses a nice substantial 12mm size pearl with a crystal clasp and with the matching earrings the set is $60).  Another good option is one of our bracelets (Incurable Romantic, Enchanted and Invitation are all $50 on our website) and with that you still get your bonus item which can be a basic pair of coordinating earrings in this scenario.”

What do you enjoy most about your job?
“Definitely the design aspect – I love it when someone emails me a photo of their wedding dress / formal dress and asks me to design something for them.  I can’t explain how it happens but a design will usually come to me.  If possible I like to see the person (either in person or a photo) and then see the dress, after that the rest just falls into place.  I’ve actually been called the jewellery whisperer LOL.”

What one piece of advice would you give to a bride and groom for their wedding?
“Schedule some down time during the wedding – even if it’s just a 5 min interlude – to be alone together to appreciate the moment.”
