Vancity Vendor: Rachel Sokacz Makeup Artist

Rachel Kutney was a small town girl who didn’t shy away from proudly expressing her individuality. Fashion and makeup was a big part of her life and she loved how glamorous and beautiful she felt because of it. The beauty industry wasn’t her original career path though, but one innocent conversation with a MAC makeup artist completely turned her life around.

Rachel has over 16 years of fashion, media, and editorial makeup experience. For the last decade, she has provided mobile makeup services to blushing brides and her entourage, cherishing every moment of being a part of such an important milestone. Her makeup rates start at $150 for the bride and $100 for each additional person, but for parties of four or more, she gives a discount. It becomes $100 for the bride and $80 for each additional person. Travel charges apply for any location outside the Metro Vancouver.

The initial consultation is compared to a chat with a good friend. Although the focus is makeup, Rachel says she likes to get a feel of her bride’s personality, sense of style, and of course what her wedding will be like. She encourages her clients to bring in photos of their favourite makeup looks so she can get a better idea of what they are looking for. A Few Words With Rachel…

What brands of products do you like to use? Why did you choose them?
“I use primarily MAC makeup; I find that of all the makeup companies out there it is the one line for artists as they offer the best selection of colors and textures with amazing pigment. As well, their foundation line offers a great variety of choices in textures and colors, more than any other line I have encountered.”

What do you have to offer for brides with lower budgets?
“I always try to accommodate my clients’ needs and offer group discounts for larger parties to help stay within a bride’s budget.”

What sets you apart from others in the same field?
“The one key aspect that sets me apart is my years of experience as a makeup artist in Vancouver. My experience working in media, my editorial background, and working with one of the leading cosmetic companies in the industry has allowed me to work on hundreds of faces over the years. As a result, my work speaks for itself.  Also, my sense of humor and easygoing personality allow me to connect immediately with my clients and put clients at ease. I have found I have been able to create a true bond of trust with my clients and I have made friendships with many of my brides beyond their wedding day.  I feel my qualities help to keep the mood of the wedding day light and fun. Anyone who has gone through the craziness of getting ready on their wedding day, me included, can attest to how stressful it can be!”

How do you determine what look is best for each person?
“I find a consultation is vital during the process of determining the look for a bride.  I take into account their personality, features, hairstyle ideas, and personal style.  I find most brides have a variety of ideas for looks they like and I always tell brides that the day of their wedding is not the day to experiment with a new look, the makeup should be a reflection of themselves.”

If a client wants a certain style but you can tell it doesn’t make them look great, how would you deal with that situation?
“I have found that most brides today are very discerning in choosing the look they want for their wedding day, many opting for a more classic timeless makeup which I absolutely love.  However, if a bride wants a style that may not be the most flattering for their features, I try to reach a compromise by showing her other options and explaining exactly how makeup enhances her features. This is why a prior consultation is so important.  Ultimately, a bride must feel good about her look, so I always support her choices.”

What do you enjoy most about your job?
“I have to admit I love all things wedding! Being the person responsible for the bride’s face is an intimate and crucial role to play and one that I truly appreciate.  I love the energy of everyone on the day of the wedding; it’s such a joy to be a creative part of that environment.”

If you had one piece of advice for a bride and groom, what would it be?
“The most important piece of advice I give my brides is to enjoy the quiet moments they have with their partner on their wedding day. Amid the craziness of the day they really need to remember that the most important part of their wedding is each other and it’s not all about seating plans and if this person is getting along with that person”
