Vancity Vendor – Sweetpiece Jewelry

Vancity Vendor: Sweetpiece Jewelry

How entrepreneur, Marjolein Poppema, started her business was an interesting story. It all stemmed from a piece of jewelry her mother wore. It caught Marjolein’s attention and as it turned out, the designer was someone she knew from her old hometown in Holland. She eventually met up with that particular designer, and she was shown the ropes and given some great advice and insight on jewelry design. A creative at heart, Marjolein became inspired and for 3 and a half years, she’s been making beautiful accessories for brides in the Lower Mainland.

Sweetpiece Jewelry designs range from dainty and delicate to what Marjolein calls “funky chunky.” She uses different varieties of beads and finishes but for her bridal collection she sticks to sterling silver, Swarovski crystals and pearls. Pricing on her jewelry depends on the materials needed to create it, which can cost as low as $21 or go up to $150 a piece. Marjolein conducts consultations at her home studio by appointment only, where she’ll be able to talk you through the process about designing a bridal set just for you.

You can also find Sweetpiece Jewelry at any of the following locations:

A Few Words With Marjolein…

Where do you get inspiration for your designs?
“I get my inspiration from many areas in the fashion industry. Often it starts with colours that are going to be the fashion for the season, then I also get inspired by the suppliers I visit. The beads that are available in different shapes and colours give me a great visual of what I would like a piece to look like. Another great inspiration is my clients, sometimes they would like an original piece and for that I have to come up with unique ideas.”

What do you have to offer to brides with lower budgets?
“I am always keen to work with the bride and her budget. There are so many different options to change the type of material or even the crystal. These elements will completely affect the price and therefore I feel I can offer many different pieces for all budgets.”

If a bride needs jewelry in a short period of time, how do you accommodate that?
“I have a hard time saying no to any bride, generally I will get the jewelry finished even if it means I have to work through the night.”

What jewelry would you suggest that would make the biggest impact on a small budget?
“I work with Swarovski crystal a lot, and it’s beautiful. It does not take much to have an impact earring with a beautiful Swarovski teardrop crystal.”

What do you enjoy most about your job?
“That is a great question, I love designing and coming up with new pieces! Just this past week I created a piece with ribbon and beads, and then I decided to make a piece with silk flowers and crystal.  Love finding new materials that I can apply in a non-traditional way.”

What one piece of advice would you give to a bride and groom for their wedding?
“I would like to say to the bride and groom: make it YOUR day, and go with what you have envisioned!”
