Vancity Vendor: TwoSeventeen Beauty

Vancity Vendor: TwoSeventeen Beauty

TwoSeventeen Beauty was the result of a friendship between a bride and her stylist. Vicky Edwards was a blushing bride in 2011 and she hired Kyla Giesbrecht to do her hair and makeup. The two hit it off right away and kept in touch well after Vicky’s wedding. Being a makeup addict herself, Vicky would bounce off ideas with Kyla and talk about everything makeup related. They enjoyed it so much that they started a blog called TwoSeventeen Beauty that included beauty tips and YouTube videos. Their chemistry was too good to ignore so they went even one step further and decided to work together full time. Vicky enrolled herself in a makeup program and this is her first year in the industry, meanwhile this is Kyla’s 3rd. Work is always more fun when you’re doing it with someone who shares your passion.

TwoSeventeen Beauty (fun fact: they named it after their favourite MAC brush #217) provides mobile hair styling and makeup for the entire wedding party. Bridal hair and makeup packages start at $190 but if you want either hair or makeup only, it’s $100 each. For bridesmaids, hair and makeup will cost $150, for mothers it’s $100. A Few Words With Kyla and Vicky…

What brands of products do you like to use? Why did you choose them?
“We both believe that having a wide range of brands in our kit is essential.  We use everything from high end brands like Chanel and Giorgio Armani to drugstore brands such as Revlon and NYX.  All of the products in our kit are ones we have tested and love, so we know they are going to look great on any bride.”

“We understand that planning a wedding can be expensive and that anywhere you can save money is helpful.  Presently, we are offering special rates for bookings of 5 or more people in a bridal party.”

What sets you apart from others in the same field?
“I think more than anything we both really care about our brides. Because we are both really outgoing and fun to be around we really make our brides feel comfortable. Almost as if we are another one of the girls rather than two hired professionals.  As hair and makeup artists we are probably the first people that the bride will see on her big day so it’s important to be upbeat and be able to make her feel relaxed and taken care of.”

How do you determine what look is best for each person?
“At the time of consultation there are a lot of things that we take into consideration when determining a look for a bride; like what does her dress look like, what time of year she’s getting married, and the theme or feel of her wedding. We also have a look book that she can go through and communicate with us what she envisions. If we don’t get the look just right on the first time we will try something totally different.  We feel as though the bride should look like her  best self,  so we focus on enhancing her natural beauty. At the end of the day we want our bride to be happy and feel confident knowing that she will look stunning on her wedding day.”

TwoSeventeen Beauty If a client wants a certain style but you can tell it doesn’t make them look great, how would you deal with that situation?
“We are professionals and hope that our bride can trust our judgement on what will best suit her.  Wording is everything and we respect our brides suggestions but we will always offer an alternative if we don’t think the look would flatter or suit them.”

What is your favourite bridal look and why?
“It’s so hard to choose just one look.  Hair down with soft curls, black winged liner and soft pale pink lips looks great on almost everyone.  Its classic, pretty and not too trendy so you won’t look back on your photos and wonder what was I thinking?”

What do you enjoy most about your job?
“This is our passion, so to be able to do something that allows us to meet different types of women and make them feel good and confident about themselves while living out our dreams of running our own business is the best part.”

If you had one piece of advice for a bride and groom, what would it be?
“On the day of, try to relax and enjoy getting ready with your bridal party members. Once you come together focus on soaking up every minute of your special day, it truly does fly by!”
