I am pleased to introduce our first Vancity Vendor, Justyna Seckler, floral artist and owner of Just Fresh Concepts.

Just Fresh Concepts is based out of Maple Ridge but her company serves couples from all over the Lower Mainland. For 3 years now, Justyna has been designing beautiful floral arrangements for weddings and special events. One might think she’s fairly new to this, but in fact she has been exposed to the floral industry for over a decade. According to her, she inherited her “green thumb” from her mom, a florist for over 25 years.

In addition to flowers, decorative rentals such as vases and pillars are also available from her.  If you wish to be more creative, she carries a variety of embellishments like ribbon, feathers and gems to add just the right touch.  She says that if she doesn’t carry a certain item a couple has requested, she will do her best to make it happen.  Delivery with complimentary setup is also available.

A Few Words With Justyna…

What sets you apart from others in the same field?
“I refer to myself as a floral artist as I don’t simply arrange flowers; I design them according to my clients’ unique, individual style.  I love listening to what my clients want and expanding those ideas, making them that much more amazing and developing them into beautiful pieces.  I know how important it is to distinguish different styles by staying current but never forgetting those timeless, traditional elements and the details that make them stand out.”

Do you have plans on expanding your services?
“After delivering flowers to so many venues, it has become utterly obvious how flowers and décor go hand in hand.  Now when I meet a bride/groom to discuss their vision I not only focus on the flowers, I also ask about all other aspects of their décor including: linens, ceiling and walls, how their colours are being distributed and even the layout of the room.  All of these factors are important to strike a perfect balance in the room.  After all if you are already paying so much for your wedding you want to make sure that your money is spent well, and that when your guests arrive they are immediately hit by that “wow” factor.  So to answer the question above, I do consider myself a decorator, but would certainly like to expand my products in the future to cover more aspects of décor.”

Where do you draw inspiration from?
“My mom has been an unbelievable inspiration.  She has worked with flowers for many, many years and her passion for flowers is only extended by her passion for her kids.  She lives and breathes flowers and absolutely loves what she does, which is what makes her so good at it.  My next inspiration would have to be a more recent one: Mr. Preston Bailey.  He is a world-renowned event planner / designer and his work is breathtaking to say the least.  He started off just like me and has experienced many of the same obstacles that new entrepreneurs have faced.  His blog says it all, and although he has reached great heights in his career, he is still determined to help those who are faced with many of the same questions he once had.”

What are your favourite flowers to work with and why?
“I love just about all flowers, as they are all so different and beautiful.  If I had to chose I suppose I would go with the classic roses because they are versatile, traditional, but can be contemporary and come in just about every colour.  Next to the roses I’m a sucker for daisies / chrysanthemums.  Although inexpensive, they can be fun to work with, there are so many varieties and if done right you can really dress them up.”

What was the most unique arrangement you’ve created for a wedding?
“The most unique arrangement I’ve created so far has to be the apple centerpieces with coordinating curly willow centerpieces.  The apple centerpieces consisted of about 10 green apples at the base of a tall clear glass cylinder vase with green hydrangea and green ivy.  Those with curly willow had floating moss with green hydrangea, green amaranthus and green ivy.  The bride really wanted a green, earthy feel in the room, and these arrangements were a perfect compliment to her style.  One of my favorites!  However, In September 2011 I will be creating a truly unique piece, which I’m sure will bump itself up to the top of my favorites list; an enchanting, rich in colour, sparkling floral chandelier.”

What do you enjoy most about your job?
“My favorite moments are those when I deliver my brides’ bouquets and see the expression on their faces.  Usually they already have so much on their mind with less than a couple hours away from saying “I do”.  But it’s that special moment I love when their faces light up and I can see how happy they are to see their flowers and they know soon they’ll be walking down the isle with their beautiful bouquet in hand.”

If you had one piece of advice for a bride and groom, what would it be?
“My biggest piece of advice would relate to my previous response.  It is really important to know how to distribute your budget.  Some brides/grooms are afraid to spend money on flowers, and prefer to allocate more of their budget towards linens/rentals.  However, a stunning floral arrangement often makes a greater impact in the room and will also last you at least a week – two weeks post your wedding as lavishing décor in you home.  Couples might also prefer to donate their centerpieces to charitable organizations or even to friends and family for others to enjoy.”
