Wintertime Florals

Wintertime Florals

It may be chilly out but that won’t stop couples from having a winter wedding! Finding your favourite flowers at a good price during the wintertime may prove difficult because they aren’t in season or they may cost more to import from another source. Vancity Vendor Justyna Seckler of Just Fresh Concepts has gladly shared her tips on floral alternatives for your winter nuptials.

“The winter season can be challenging for the floral industry.  The weather takes a toll on availability of our most favorite blooms and prices will often double.  To avoid blowing your wedding budget I would suggest sticking with beautiful foliage and willow branches (above), using single stemmed blooms as accents.  Foliage can be used in so many beautiful ways without classifying it as a filler.  Although not always green, foliage may not be your thing and you may not be a fan of decorative branches.  Personally I love a beautiful blue winter wedding.  My choice would be one or all of the three.  The decorative kiwi willow sprayed in a snow white made to look like a forest with fresh fallen snow glistening with candle light.

My next pick would be carnations, although they are often overlooked they can be beautiful if used in the right way, perhaps a solid globe or softer textured arrangement of white carnations.

My next choice would be baby’s breath that has also been given a bad reputation over the years.  But baby’s breath is so lovely and has made a huge come back this year and in 2012.

For those pretty blue accents I would suggest splashes of some imported blooms such as delphinium, eryngium, wax flowers and perhaps some blue hydrangea (below).  If blue and white is not your colour choice this combination can be made with any colour, such as a rich palette of fuchsias, pinks and reds.  Every season brings something new and exciting to work with.  Be creative and don’t feel restricted because of the winter cold.  There is something really beautiful about getting married during this time of year.  The crisp weather, fresh fallen snow and the holiday joy brings a certain magic to the winter season.”
