Vancity Vendor – Cookievonster

Vancity Vendor: Cookievonster

Evon Au has loved baking since she was a child, but baking cookies for a living wasn’t part of her initial plan. She moved to Canada a few years ago and decided to take a break from work. With all this time on her hands, she baked and learned to decorate cookies, and her friends and family reaped the benefits, of course! This led to lots of requests for special occasion cookies so Evon made it official and launched her cleverly named business, Cookievonster.

Cookievonster is a young company, only in the business for over 2 years. Their specialty is delectable, custom hand-decorated cookies for all occasions. Evon works directly with the client to create a personalized design that best suits their event. If you check their website, they also offer holiday designs like Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, Halloween, and even some fun looking festive 3D cookies! The base for their decorated cookies is vanilla shortbread, chocolate shortbread, or gingerbread, but that’s only available in the fall or winter seasons. Cookievonster’s menu also extends to cupcakes and gourmet cookies. All items are made fresh to order, using the highest quality ingredients. Evon also loves using ingredients that she herself enjoys, such as the Bacon Chocolate Chip cookie… it’s no secret, Evon loves bacon, and apparently a lot of people do too because she says that cookie is always the first to sell out at bake sales… as strange as a bacon cookie may sound!

Evon’s cookies make great wedding favors, as you can see throughout this page. Cookies for wedding favors usually range between 3 to 4 inches in size. The price will depend on the design, detail, size, and quantity, which ranges between $2.50 and $8 per cookie.  Simple designs will consist of a basic main colour, and an outline detailing design limited to 2 colours. Packaging is also available, from bags to boxes, whichever will go well with your event and your budget. You can also get custom tags for an extra cost but Evon says they can be omitted if you’ve got a message written on the cookie anyway. For orders over $200, Evon will deliver your cookies for free within the Greater Vancouver area.

To see Evon’s latest work, like the Cookievonster Facebook page, follow her on Twitter, or check her website in case there are any upcoming special promos. Evon says she usually has seasonal cookie sets for each holiday season for a special price… something to look out for when the time comes!

A Few Words With Evon…

What do you have to offer for brides with lower budgets?
“We can customize a design to suit almost any budget. We can create larger cookies or bags of mini gourmet cookies to cater to a lower budget.”

What sets you apart from others in the same field?
“Our decorated cookies are of a higher quality in design, detail and flavour. Our decorated cookies are buttery shortbread cookies and not sugar cookies.”

Will you be expanding your menu to include other baked goods for wedding favors?
Cookievonster bags of mixed mini bite-sized cookies are very popular for wedding and party favours. The most popular mini cookies are our brown butter chocolate chip cookies, chocolate marbled caramel peanut butter cookies, raspberry cream filled melting moments and for a twist, our spicy Mayan chocolate fudge cookie. We also offer cupcakes and cookies for wedding receptions, like our double chocolate cupcakes with all natural fresh berry buttercream frosting.”

What do you enjoy most about your job?
“The people. I love meeting people. The baking, I love baking. The design process is the most enjoyable part since I get to be creative. And, the best part of my job is when I see the big smiles on my clients’ faces when they see their cookies for the first time. Simply said, my job makes me happy and I love everything about what I do.”

How early should a client order?
“For a wedding, a month in advance would be recommended. If the client requires a specific packaging for the cookies that may have to be outsourced, 3 months advance notice would be required.”

How should a client store cookies to maintain freshness, and for how long?
“Shortbread and gingerbread cookies stay fresh for up to 3 months when kept in an air tight bag or container, and in a dry cool place.”

If you had one piece of advice for a bride and groom, what would it be?
“First and foremost, remember to have fun at your wedding. Plan your wedding to reflect who you are and always remember that your wedding is not solely to impress your guests. No matter what your budget is, it’s a day where you share and celebrate who you are as a couple, so create a style that reflects your personality. And if you plan to present your guests with a wedding favour, give them a practical gift that they will appreciate and enjoy … like a beautiful delectable cookie!”
