Vancity Vendor: Truffles Fine Foods

Fanny Dufour - Truffles Fine Foods Before I left for vacation in September, I was invited to dinner at Truffles Fine Foods at VanDusen Botanical Garden. I sat down with Sales and Marketing Manager Fanny Dufour and talked about what Truffles is all about while enjoying hors d’oeuvres and a 3 course meal. It was fantastic! I loved the food, well prepared, nicely presented, in addition to that, Fanny was such a pleasure to talk to that I had no choice but to share this gem with you :) Btw, if you want to see the dinner I had, you can find it in my Facebook album.

Truffles Fine Foods was founded in 2005 and mostly catered to the film industry, working for shows such as Arrow, Night at the Museum, and Once Upon a Time. 4 years later, they decided to serve the general public catering to offsite events and weddings. Their café at VanDusen opened in 2011 and really contributed in getting their name out there in terms of special events and wedding catering. Their bookings have been increasing every wedding season so clearly they must be doing something right.

They specialize in event catering, big or small, and pride themselves in their high quality of service and knowledgeable staff. They can go from upscale weddings and corporate events to casual BBQ, picnic and food truck parties. They also offer full rentals, liquor and bar services as well as event planning and designing. Call it a one stop shop if you will, as they have also partnered with a lot of different wedding vendors who can complete your wedding day team.

Truffles can custom-make dishes according to your needs. They can satisfy most dietary needs (except kosher) as long as they have enough notice. They have lots of gluten-free and vegan options available as well, which you can see on their sample menus (to help give you an idea, buffet price ranges from $65-$85 per person). They have also done a lot of ethnic fusion menus, using East Indian, Croatian or French cuisines to name a few. They only do promotions when they attend bridal shows so keep an eye out for them! You may even be lucky enough to try an hors d’oeuvre! Keep an eye out for their new café at the Anvil Centre, slated to open on January, 2015. A Few Words With Fanny…

Truffles Fine Foods What do you have to offer for brides with lower budgets?
“We thrive at understanding their catering needs and their budget requirement. Brides sometimes come with a dream in mind or something they saw at a wedding or on Pinterest, which can be over budget. We will take the time necessary to educate them on catering services; explaining to them why a budget of $25/person for food is challenging and breaking down the cost of food, labour and additional services, all essential to make their day memorable. We offer affordable catering prices, our buffet menu ranges for instance from $60 to $85 with rentals, labour, bartender, dinnerware/linens and services charge/gratuities (no liquor). We have an add on with our buffet menu that offers of 3 hors d’oeuvres per person for only $8. It allows brides to afford a cocktail hour before their wedding dinner. We also have our own rentals at the VanDusen Garden (no available for plated dinner) that we offer at a very affordable prices (compared to using a rental company).”

Truffles Fine Foods What sets you apart from others in the same field?
“We have a very personable approach with our clients, handling any kinds of events (from 10 to 500 people) the same way; we are fast at getting back to catering inquiries and always send proposal on the day of (unless we need to custom make menus and get quotes from various vendors.). We assist them in the coordination of their event, can handle all the rentals and have an in-house designer/planner who can take care of décor/flowers and much more! We are also thrilled to be located on two amazing venues:

  • VanDusen Botanical Garden (café and official on site caterer): A very convenient way for the bride to do a site visit of the facilities and then meet with us for a consultation (our sales & marketing department is located inside the café)
  • We also recently got selected as the exclusive caterer of the Anvil Centre, a modern conference/convention centre located downtown New Westminstrer. We will also open a café onsite in December 2014″

Why did you choose to offer additional day of coordination services to your clients?
“We just felt that clients wanted to deal with the minimum of vendors (when they don’t have a wedding planner), they were asking us if we would take care of finding flowers, décor for them or even source their venue! We have work with Sin4Studio for lots of events and decided of hire her as our in-house event designer/planner.”

Where do you source your ingredients? Do you try to stick with local products and why?
“When it comes to selecting our ingredients, we support local, organic growers, when possible to ensure our food is the finest quality, which results in the best taste and presentation to ensure your event to be extraordinary. We are proud partner of Ocean wise and the Green Table Network. We also want to help and only use local supplier when the food doesn’t come from our kitchen. Our café at VanDusen carries gluten free products from Cloud 9 Bakery, the famous banana bread from Erin Ireland or Chocolate from Thomas Haas.”

“Getting married is about love, fun and memories; don’t undervalue the catering part of your big day!”
