Vancity Vendor – Inno Bakery

One afternoon, my husband and I decided to check out this shop called Inno Bakery in downtown Poco.  We heard that it was a great place to get some fresh breads and imported pasta.  Upon entering, the first thing we saw was an array of traditional and creative wedding cakes on display. A staff member mentioned to us that they were gearing up for an upcoming cake show. Intrigued, I went to the cake show and was treated to a bunch of samples, while I admired a plethora of beautiful cake and cupcake creations. That day, I met Jae Park, the General Manager of Inno Bakery, and I decided to get to know him and his business a little more.

Inno Bakery has been around for the past 30 years and Jae and his staff bake cakes for all occasions. They cater to everyone and you may even recognize one of his clients, former Vancouver Canuck, Trevor Linden.  Inno Bakery made a special cake for the grand opening of Club 16 in Coquitlam.

Jae says that a major factor in the price of a cake is its size. To give you a better idea, as an example, he said that a simple 2-tiered fondant covered cake big enough for 75 people would cost around $180, just over $2/slice.  This cake includes a 12” bottom tier and 8” top tier.  If you’re looking for a multi-tiered cake for a lower cost, he offers the option to add fake layers to a cake, or make a whole fake cake instead. This can cost nearly half the price of a real cake. It would also be a good idea to keep an eye on the Tri-city newspapers for coupons they release monthly and they also offer a 20% discount on a minimum $200 cake order in store. Delivery and setup is also available, for a base rate of $65.

What do you have to offer for brides with lower budgets?
“I believe the question is ‘do we have an offer for brides with lower budgets?’ and the answer is yes.  I believe we can put something together that the bride will be happy with for under $100.  This does not include delivery and set up though, to save money I would suggest a friend pick up the cake, and to limit set up, have a two tier cake with no pillars.”

What sets you apart from others in the same field?
“Our main business is not just wedding cakes, we do hundreds of cakes per week by hand.  We can afford to charge lower prices to people looking for cakes because we make so many of them.  I see ourselves as the wholesaler of wedding cakes.”

Do you cater to different dietary requests?  If so, which ones?
“We try to as much as possible, allergies, vegan cupcakes are possible, sugar free options.”

What are your most unique cake and filling flavours?
“I don’t know about unique, but a popular one is espresso, cream cheese and vanilla bean butter cream.”

What do you enjoy most about your job?
“It is almost impossible to satisfy everyone, but we try, and when we succeed, it is a great feeling.”

If you had one piece of advice for a bride and groom, what would it be?
“Shop around, but always give Inno bakery a chance, we may surprise you.”
