Vancity Vendor: Cornwall Stationery

Hesha - Cornwall Stationery It all started as a hobby. Designer, Hesha from Cornwall Stationery always had an interest in visual arts and began designing wedding stationery for friends and family for fun. Eventually she made one for herself as well, and once all her friends were no longer single, she missed designing. She decided to create her own Etsy shop so she can keep creating original and modern stationery for new couples in Vancouver and beyond.

Cornwall Stationery specializes in creating custom-designed, hand-crafted wedding stationery, Cornwall Stationery including invitations, menu cards, programs, thank you cards, seating charts, favour bags, monograms and more. They are inspired by each couple’s unique personality and event theme so you know that the result is perfectly tailored to you and no one else. Pricing starts at $3.50 for 50 flat-panel invitations, printed on linen-textured cardstock with a matte backing and matte envelope and goes up from there depending on complexity of the design. Anything goes though… gatefold, pocketfold, square? What’s your pleasure? She can add glitter, multiple mats, or gorgeous embellishments such as lace, fabric, ribbon, wax seals, gemstones, even woodgrain sheets! The whole ordering process takes about 6 to 10 weeks but she does accept rush orders too if they have capacity. It all starts with a consultation with the couple to learn about how they perceive their design. Initial designs and proof approval takes place in the first 2 or 3 weeks and once done, a 50% deposit is taken and production begins. Locals can pick up their orders but out of towners can have their orders shipped to them for an additional fee.

A Few Words With Hesha…

Cornwall Stationery What do you have to offer for brides with lower budgets?
“Many of our couples come to us with two conditions in mind: (a) “My budget is $X”, and (b) “This is what I really want!”. When coming up with their creatives, we look at these conditions and design alternatives that can work under both. We also identify adjustments that can be made with each creative so they can modify the size, finish, layers or embellishments, to meet their needs. Our prices start at $3.50/invite, for a minimum order of 50 matte invitations, including envelopes. Pricing goes up from there for gatefold, pocketfold, card-style, or square invites, or for invitations that include glitter, embellishments, metallic stock or layers.”

Cornwall Stationery What sets you apart from others in the same field?
“There are a variety of wonderfully talented stationers in Vancouver, and we are proud to be amongst some truly gifted and hard working artists. Cornwall Stationery is similar to these stationers in that we pride ourselves on our exquisite quality. We use the very best materials and inks, and consistently produce stationery that is of a high standard. We, however, break from the mold in our approach to design and service. We realize that every couple is unique, and believe the personalities of each bride and groom (or bride and bride, or groom and groom!) and the soul of their celebration should be represented in their wedding stationery. It is, after all, a vital new beginning in their lives and should be recognized as such! This Cornwall Stationery principle guides all of the work we produce for our couples – and is the reason why we custom make each item. Our attention to service goes hand-in-hand with this principle. We don’t see our couples as “customers”. Our job is to help kick off your wedding celebrations in a memorable and personally meaningful way. We respond to emails, phone calls, design changes, order adjustments, color revisions, etc. in a very open and prompt way. We are here to help you in your wedding planning journey and strive to make working with us a positive experience.”

How would you describe your design style?
“Our style shines through in all of the work we do. We describe it as a minimalist style that expresses personality – clean, modern, fresh, subtle …and vibrant.”

Cornwall Stationery What do you enjoy most about your job?
“The most exciting part of doing this work is taking the intangible, subtle and nuanced elements of people’s personalities and turning them into real, defined visual art. It’s a challenge that we love, and it fuels our passion for what we do.”

What was the most creative invitation you designed?
“One of my most enjoyable commissions was to create a Tour de France-themed wedding invitation for a couple who love cycling. Although my knowledge of the race and of the roadcycling culture was limited, we conducted our research and came up with a design they fell in love with.”

Cornwall Stationery Do you draw inspiration from other designers?
“Many of our design inspirations come from fashion. Specifically, the mixture of exquisite fabrics showcasing rich, deep colours and distinct textures. We recognize how simple, yet powerful and emotive, many of these pieces can be. Other inspirations come from photography and the interplay of subjects, patterns and light. And other times, it’s our couples and the vision they have for their celebration.”

What advice do you have for those who want to DIY their invitations?
“DIY is a good way to cut back on certain wedding expenses, however take care to not compromise quality. If you are confident that your materials are of a high quality, that you have a well-functioning, high end printer, and Cornwall Stationery that you have the attention to detail and patience to put everything together, you can certainly consider the DIY option. I would recommend getting the digital design of your stationery professionally made to ensure that after all of your efforts the results don’t disappoint.”

If you had one piece of advice for a bride and groom, what would it be?
“Try your best, then leave the rest! Wedding planning can sometimes be an ulcer-inducing experience, creating tensions and conflict for an ocassion that should be filled with awe and togetherness. Don’t lose sight of what it’s all for ☺.”
