Vancity Vendor: Design by Dainty

Jennifer Ku and Sara Ahn share similar passions, a love for design and a love for weddings. Over a simple coffee date, they decided to break away from their everyday jobs and start a career where they are able to combine both their expertise and their passion. That’s how Design by Dainty came to be.

Design by Dainty provides custom design services for wedding invitations and stationery, including logo and monogram design upon request. Printing prices vary on the kind of finishing and size of the order. The pricing on their website shows that single-sided custom-designed flat-printed invitations with envelopes start at around $3.80 per piece, depending on how much you order. Of course because each order is different, from quantity to design complexity to quality of paper and embellishments, pricing will vary so it’s best to contact Jennifer or Sara for a more detailed quote.

Design by Dainty is proud to support local businesses. All their supplies are sourced from paper shops in the city, but are willing to outsource elsewhere to best fit their client’s budget. If you like what you see, get in touch with Design by Dainty and provide them with all the information that they need including details, colour choices and how you want your invitation to look like. The design process will start once they have everything they need. Once you’ve placed your order, your invitations can be done in as little as 5 weeks, thanks to the reliable printer that they work with. If you want to find out more about them, get in touch with them on Facebook or follow them on Twitter.

A Few Words With Jennifer and Sara…

What do you have to offer for brides with lower budgets?
“For brides with lower budgets, we would recommend them to have smaller amount of stationery. This could cut costs in print and material. A basic set of custom designed invitations and RSVP cards would be perfect for them. Our pricing starts at $350, which includes design and printing for approximately 80 guests. Pricing will vary depending on your guest list. Within all of our services (regardless if you’re a budget bride or rich bride), we include 200 white or cream envelopes and two writing tools, if requested, such as gold markers or black fine tip pen to write on the envelopes. We have our budget bride packages available but for custom packages, please contact us for your quote.”

What sets you apart from others in the same field?
“We are passionate about what we do and promise to deliver high quality, exceptional design and admirable service with each client. From research on materials, design process and printing, we will not let you down! Our products are all printed locally in Vancouver BC and hand assembled by the team. We do the research for our clients in terms of finding the best deals for material/ paper/ and printer costs for their budget.”

How would you describe your design style?
S: “We both have different styles when it comes to design even when it comes to our own fashion sense. That’s why we make such a great team. Sometimes Jen will see something I don’t notice and I will notice something she won’t notice. It’s a good balance. I would say my designs are very feminine, elegant and modern. I love mixed typography but at the same time I love simplicity.”

J: “I think the best part of being a designer is to be creative, multidisciplinary and flexible. I love to explore different ways of combing elements together or create a theme for the design. Usually I start with questioning myself, how would I imagine this wedding to be like or if I were one of the guests, what do I like to see. I love working with Sara, as she mentioned, we both have very different designs and styles. We notice each others slips sometimes. I am fairly feminine and detailed with my design style but in a different way than Sara.”

What do you enjoy most about your job?
S: “I enjoy creating dainty elegant invitations. Whatever the theme may be I love the idea of designing and embedding the bride’s & groom’s personalities and style onto paper. It’s the first impression for all the lovely guests who will be receiving them in the mail. Meeting new clients and the design process is always enjoyable as well.”

J: “I think I love all parts of my job! It sounds very cheesy but I really enjoy meeting the clients, listening to their ideas, researching, designing, problem solving and getting the prints ready.”

What was the most creative invitation you designed?
S: “Our work with Jayme and Corey was definitely one of our favorites! The couple was our first Design By Dainty client; they were a fun couple to work with. We love when couples are open to ideas and don’t really have a preference in design because then we can get as creative as we like! Jayme and Corey are having a destination wedding in Maui, Hawaii so we really wanted to make it fun. Their wedding invitation and RSVP are bold, fun and quirky! It was a lot of mixed typography and bold colour choices!”

J: “It’s difficult to say what is creative and what is not. We both have pieces that we like and enjoy doing. But one of our most fun recent collaboration was with Victoria of Dash of Blonde, a local Wedding Planner. She created this beautiful Glamour Rustic wedding theme and brought together different local talents such as florists, a baker and a photographer to put together her vision. She hired us to create a set of wedding invitations and stationery that looked absolutely gorgeous with her table setting. It was very rewarding to see the results.”

If you had one piece of advice for a bride and groom, what would it be?
“One piece of advice we give to couples is to have the information for the invitations + RSVP ready when you approach the designers- information like the wedding venue, date, time, wording etc. As designers, we want to use your time efficiently and be able to meet deadlines for your invitations. Most couples come with an in mind. But if you are lost in the wedding invitation department you can contact us and we would be more than happy to meet with you and brainstorm some ideas together during consultation.”
