A Few Words With Mischa and Ryan…

Why did you want to become wedding photographers?
“We are storytellers. As film industry professionals, we love telling stories through visual mediums. But what inspires us most is spending time with couples in love, taking great photo’s and collaborating with other creative minds. Wedding photography has enabled us to merge our two passions into one: helping couples tell their unique stories through beautiful images.”

Paper Rodeo

What do you have to offer for brides with lower budgets?
“We offer custom pricing if Brides are looking for options that we don’t offer in our packages. For example, we’ve done mini-wedding packages (2-4 hours) for Brides that are only planning a ceremony but no formal reception, or vice-versa, a party with family/friends after the intimate destination wedding. Also, our one-stop-shop helps you get the most bang for your buck when you combine photos and paper goods.”

Paper Rodeo What sets you apart from others in the same field?
“We always shoot with two shooters, which allows us to collaborate creatively and capture moments from two unique perspectives. We prefer natural lighting, but when that’s not possible we use our flashes and gear to re-create a natural or ambient light story. Ry has ample experience designing lighting for motion pictures, and Mischa has excellent attention to detail and post-production/photo editing skills. We pride ourselves in offering a one-stop-shop for our clients with the combination of photography services and custom paper goods.”

How would you describe your shooting and photo editing style?
“Our shooting style is photojournalistic and we always shoot with two shooters. When editing we aim to create a timeless image – we are not heavy handed, but every photo is touched for consistency. At times we can see that a particular photo or group of photos lends itself to a slight nudge in its colour story, so we will take it there and deliver an alternate. It might want to be more desaturated, vintage, or black & white.”

Paper Rodeo

What made you decide to offer custom paper goods as well?
“We love to offer a ‘customized wedding experience’ where the couple can have a consistent style dialogue btw their photos and their stationery/design elements. You could say we curate weddings for our clients to share their story.”

How would you describe your invitation design style?
“We aim to create modern, unique, and eye-catching artwork that makes our clients say that’s totally me! With a love of typography and bold graphic elements, we strive to create a connection between use of fonts/hand drawn elements and photography. Everything that Paper Rodeo creates is custom so we like to begin this process with an in-person meeting to gather some background info about the client’s style and personality.”

What do you enjoy most about your job?
“We enjoy meeting new couples in-love, and learning about what makes them unique, what sets their story apart from others, hopefully resulting in true artistic collaboration and amazing photos!”

Paper Rodeo

What was the most creative shot you took and how did you come up with it?
“This was a fun engagement shoot, and we wanted to play up this couple’s spontaneous personality and capture a summertime fee ling. Getting to the final shoot took a good amount of takes, we had to protect our camera’s with water-proof sleeves, capture the perfect water splash-swirl, and focus on the couple through the flying water.”

Paper Rodeo Which part of the wedding is your most favourite to shoot and why?
“We really enjoy capturing the first dance. It’s a classic moment in most weddings, but can look generic if you don’t try to bring in some personal elements with the composition. It’s also a challenging shot because you’ve got a time constraint (the length of a song 1-3 minutes), and usually very low light.  Our equipment helps us get 50% of the way there technically, so the rest is up to the photographer/artist. We try to find the perfect angle (maybe bringing in the crowd, the venue, or a personal design element in the background), the perfect lighting, and pull it all together so it looks the couple on their day, as opposed to just any bride and groom. We also enjoy capturing close ups of the rings!”

Paper Rodeo

Where is your favourite place/part of the city to take pictures for a shoot?
“We love shooting in Railtown at dusk. It’s a bit more secluded, so the couple may feel more comfortable compared to a public street or park. There are tonnes of distressed textures everywhere, which offer a nice contrast to a glamorous bride and groom.”

Do you draw inspiration from other photographers?
“We draw inspiration from our family, our friends, photography workshops (most recently Joe McNally) and sometimes just from people-watching at our favourite cafe. Solid inspiration can be drawn from working in the film industry, as most directors have a signature style, colour story, or vision that we get to be involved in from shooting to delivery. Seeing that take shape, and most importantly the ‘process’ in which it takes shape is truly an education in itself. We are grateful for it.”

If you had one piece of advice for a bride and groom, what would it be?
“The bride and groom should carve 5-10 minutes out in the evening, and just take a walk together outside the venue. Most newlyweds will say that they can’t remember most of the evening due to all the excitement. So we say – go take a walk, just the two of you and live in the moment. Oh, and ask  your maid of honour to tell us when you escape, so we can capture that moment!”
