DIY Speech Bubbles

Friends having fun with the bubbles!

If you are having a photobooth at your wedding, you’ll need props. I found that one of our most popular props were the ones we made ourselves, the erasable speech and thought bubbles. We needed something that conveyed speech because we knew our friends would write stuff that would crack us up! It definitely made for memorable photos and people, young and old, made good use of it. It was such an easy project, anyone can do it. Here’s how…

Materials

  • Whiteboard tiles from any office supplies store  (the ones we got were thin, foam-backed, and came in a 2-pack, roughly $14)
  • Thick permanent marker, chiseled edge
  • Pencil and eraser
  • A pair of strong scissors or utility knife
  • Whiteboard markers in assorted colours and an eraser

Instructions

  1. Trace the outline of the speech bubble with a pencil, as close to the edge of the whiteboard tile as possible to maximize writing space, but make sure to leave room for the tail. It is best to do a speech and a thought bubble for variety.
  2. Cut around the outline of the bubble using scissors or a utility knife. Be careful and don’t cut yourself! If you drew a thought bubble, just cut as close to each bubble as you can, leaving the tail still as one piece.
  3. Trace a border around your bubble with the permanent marker. A chiseled edged marker works best so you will end up with a thick, consistent border.
  4. Smooth out the edges with a pair of scissors.
  5. Write a message using the whiteboard markers, hold it up next to your head and SMILE :D

The Finished Product

See how easy that was? The best part is, you can even sell it after your wedding is done. If I had to make these again, I would make it so the other bubble’s tail will be facing the other way.

What would you write in your bubble?

This is a GREAT idea Jeannine! We’re just finalizing our props for our June 4th hockey themed wedding and I’m going to make some of these up for sure!

Just curious, did the photobooth flash cause glare on the white boards?

We had professional lighting at our booth but I suppose it was a little bright on some photos, it was a little hard to see the writing.
