Vancity Vendor: Michael James Entertainment

Michael Karran loves to entertain. He discovered his knack for getting the party started 7 years ago while putting on fun events for the community. He decided to follow his gut and start his own DJ company in 2008. Along with daughter Brianna, Michael James Entertainment has provided tunes for more than 100 events, with half of them being weddings.

Their wedding rate is $450 for the first 4 hours and $50/hr after that. This rate is applicable for weddings held in Metro Vancouver from West Vancouver to the Misson and Abbotsford area. A travel fee will apply for weddings at a greater distance. To help bring out the party atmosphere, they provide various lights such as 2 dual gem LED lights in green, red and blue (with a strobe function), a white rotating LED light, and a newly purchased laser light in blue and red. They’ll even bust out their fog machine to add an air of mystery on the dance floor! Michael says he and Brianna have a lot of singing experience and have performed in front of audiences hundreds of times in the last 10 years. Who knows, maybe they’ll have a surprise performance at your wedding? A little something different for you and your guests :)

A Few Words With Michael…

What do you have to offer for brides with lower budgets?
“We just have the one price as stated above, a very good value for what you’re getting. Remember, we provide the most popular genres of music, awesome sound quality, and just create a fun evening where we try to get as many people as we can to dance, sing, clap their hands, hence our singing, stage, and entertaining expertise, we’re very good at creating an awesome evening!”

What sets you apart from others in the same field?
“The same as to what I stated above, we provide great variety of music, use a top quality sound system, and with our expertise in entertaining, we know exactly what to do to get the crowd involved, we’re proud to say we do an awesome job! And let me add one more thing, our personalities, we’re very friendly and approachable, whatever your need is, you’ll feel comfortable in talking with us.”

What do you enjoy most about your job?
“Pretty well everything, meeting new people, playing a variety of music, taking requests, just being a part of their special day does mean a lot to us, just knowing that they chose us to be in charge of their music for the day, is really appreciated. We truly have fun at what we do.”

What’s the best way to liven up a crowd? Which songs usually get the guests up and dancing?
“Actually every crowd is different, but there are a few songs that always get them going, and I play them at every gig, most of the time getting an awesome response. And combined with our singing and stage experience, we usually get quite a few people up on the dance floor during the course of the evening. But do remember, every group is different, but overall the evening goes over fabulous.”

Hiring a DJ can be considered a luxury, especially for brides on a budget. Why do you think budget brides should book a DJ anyway?
“It’s nice to know that the music part of your evening is covered, you have no worries. And this is VERY important, I believe the 2 most important parts of your reception, is the dinner and the music. Of course you want very good food, and it’s no different about the music. You want to hire a proven, well respected dj, with good testimonials, they do tell a fair bit about that person you’re going to hire. This is important as well, in the beginning stages of contact with your potential dj, make sure you call him, or he calls you. I’m sure you’ve experienced this before where you’ve had a conversation with somebody you don’t really know, and can already tell a fair bit about that person, that alone could be your deciding factor! And one more thing to keep in mind, there is a fair bit more to dj’ing, than just playing music, anyone can do that. It’s the personalities, their choice of music they play, when to play the right song, and when not to. Also reading a crowd is very important, to see what they like and what they do not like. Plus, with the lights we bring to every show, we create a very nice ambience, very well received! Again, as I mentioned above, everyone can have the same music, but it’s what else you do that makes the evening a little different and special.”

If you had one piece of advice for a bride and groom, what would it be?
“I would say, do make sure you do your homework in picking the right dj for your event. Some of the important factors to consider would be personality, variety of songs, quality of system, etc. But one of the most important things you could do, there is 2 of them really. One of them is to read their TESTIMONIALS, that will tell you a lot, so important! And secondly, call them, you can only tell so much in an e-mail, serious, talk over the phone with them, a good 5-10 minutes, maybe even more, and you’ll get a really good feel for the type of person they are. Can’t stress it enough, good luck in your search, all the best!”
