Athalia's Photography

This week’s Vancity Vendor is a photographer just breaking through the wedding industry. Meet Julin Lee of Athalia’s Photography. Ever since she was little, she’s had her eye on cameras, but was never allowed to have one. It wasn’t until after she graduated from university that she decided to follow her instincts, because as it turned out, photography was her true passion. After learning the craft by herself and taking some courses from local photography schools, she started shooting her friends’ weddings and there was no turning back.

Julin mainly shoots weddings and lifestyle photoshoots, but won’t turn down the occasional fashion and commercial shoots. Wedding packages start at $980 and it includes full day coverage, an engagement session, a 12×12 30-page album, a private online gallery and slideshow, a DVD of unlimited edited photos of the couple’s choice with 150 signature retouched photos, and a second photographer. Prices will increase if you add extra services like a photobooth, longer hours, or if you order a fancier album or canvases. Customizable packages are also available, Julin will help you determine what’s best for your wedding and your budget. Be sure to check her blog and Facebook page in case she posts up promotions!

Julin describes her photo editing style as soft, vintage photojournalistic. If you like it, have a consultation with her, she’ll even buy coffee! Most of all, she’s there to listen to your needs and will be able to design a photography package for you, or even help you find a vendor you still have yet to hire.

*** Important Note: Athalia’s Photography has re-located to Seattle and will no longer be accepting Vancouver bookings. Sorry for the inconvenience. ***

A Few Words With Julin…

What do you have to offer for brides with lower budgets?
“We, my husband and I, have been in the same situation before, trying to fit everything in a very limited budget, so we try our best to cater to different clients needs with customizable packages to fit in the budget, for example if albums are not crucial, they can add it on later, etc.”

What sets you apart from others in the same field?
“Being a budget bride myself, I know there are a lot of things we drool over in wedding magazines, like me dreaming of a Vera Wang $8,000 dress but in reality I can never afford it! Heartbroken but had to move on, I compromised with my husband and settled for an Enzoani $1,300 dress (which I still love dearly). It was very stressful trying to fit everything into our budget. So after our own experience, we decided to have customizable packages to cater to different budgets to lessen budget couple’s burden but one thing for sure we will never compromise with quality. After all the time, effort, energy and money couples spent in months (or even years!) preparing, all that will be left of the celebration will be sweet memories, and we want to make sure that every time our clients open up those photos again, they can relive every single moment that happened!”

What do you enjoy most about your job?
“I enjoy the challenges, time management skills I have to learn, but most of all I LOVE meeting new people and I treasure the connections I built with my clients. I have learned so much from them, be it about life, love, work, relationships, or shopping tips!”

What was the most creative shot you took and how did you come up with it?
“I was eager to do a budget wedding inspiration, and one of my best friends asked me to watch ‘Black Swan’ and said that I might pick up some ideas from the movie, and sure enough I did. During the ‘Black Swan’ inspired wedding inspiration, I took some bridal fashion photos by the beach area, the model was wearing my wedding dress, and it had such a lovely long tail, so I had the idea of laying her down on the tail, and voila! She looks like Ice princess here!”

Which part of the wedding is your most favourite to shoot and why?
“Different weddings have different customs that I love about them but I always love the part when bride and groom walks out from ceremony, where everyone is cheering, throwing petals/rice or letting go of balloons, and the happy groom would just swoop in to kiss the bride, the emotion is overwhelming and you can see everyone is just SO happy!”

Where is your favourite place/part of the city to take pictures for a shoot?
“Currently Barnet Marine park! It’s a great quiet location where couples can be more comfortable to do themed engagement sessions, portraits, pets etc with a great view.”

Do you draw inspiration from other photographers?
“YES! So many wedding photographers have inspired me, love Jose Villa’s work, I have a huge crush on him ;) , Joy Harmon, Jasmine Star, and many many more..”

What gear do you use?
“Canon AND Nikon. I own both systems ( at least for now ) I used to shoot Nikon only, but in my heart I know I wanted Canon’s skin color :P Well still the truth my Canon 5D mark II can never beat my Nikon D700 autofocus, sharpness and low light performance so I had to be greedy and keep both!”

If you had one piece of advice for a bride and groom, what would it be?
“Enjoy your wedding planning ! We know it can be super stressful, but try to enjoy it as much as you can, we were worried about money and other things so much that we missed the ‘enjoying’ part, months passed in the blink of an eye, and we can’t go back again.”
