Vancity Vendor – Audra’s Photography

Vancity Vendor: Audra's Photography

Who knew that Audra Colpitts’ fascination with her father’s flash cube cameras back in the day would lead into a successful & rewarding career? As she grew up, she immersed herself in the art by joining the photography & yearbook clubs in high school and later on took on a job at a photo lab. From there, she started shooting weddings for family and friends and one day, someone outside her circle wanted to hire her. It was an offer she couldn’t refuse. She booked several more after that thanks to the power of word of mouth and to this moment, she’s still doing what she loves to do.

This is Audra’s Photography‘s 10th year! Let’s all wish her a Happy 10th Anniversary! :) She specializes in weddings, engagement, family, and children portraits. Packages start at $1200 + tax for 4 hours of coverage, an online gallery, and hi-res files on DVD. Promotional packages are occasionally released on Audra’s Facebook page so be a fan and keep an eye out for it! Also available for order are albums for every budget, canvas prints, save-the-date and thank you cards.

Audra’s studio is located at her home in South Surrey. Consultations are encouraged so Audra can get to know you  both, as well as get a feel for what your wedding day will be like. You’ll also get a chance to have a look at her albums and portfolio, which you can also do on her website and blog. To keep up with the latest trends in photography, she attends seminars & workshops, relies on bridal and fashion magazines for inspiration, as well as websites like the International Society of Professional Wedding Photographers. She also reflects on her own work to remind herself why her clients have chosen her to capture their special day.

A Few Words With Audra…

What do you have to offer for brides with lower budgets?
“Where a lot of photographers have you purchase a minimum of 8 hours, I have a basic 4 hour package that can cover the ceremony and formals, plus a little bit of the bridal prep or the beginning of the reception. I am also willing to customize a package that can suit just about any couple’s needs.”

What sets you apart from others in the same field?
“I am a full time photographer, which means I am 100% dedicated to my couples. Whether it is my first wedding of the year or the last, you will feel like you are the only couple I have photographed. I limit the number of weddings I take in a year to about 15 so that I maintain the excitement of photography and weddings will never become a ‘job’ to me. I also keep my post processing to a minimum, avoiding many of the special effects that may date your images years from now.”

How would you describe your shooting and photo editing style?
“I shoot a mix of candid and traditional photographs. I photograph most of the day in a photojournalistic style – staying in the background wherever possible and during the formals I will guide you into casual poses. I keep the portrait session very relaxed and fun! My photo editing style is clean and contemporary with only basic editing applied.”

What do you enjoy most about your job?
“I absolutely love being with couples on their wedding day. The nervous energy, the emotion, the excitement… I love it all! I am a people person so getting to know a couple and meeting new people all the time keeps me energized. Of course I also enjoy getting the emails afterward where the couple raves about their wedding photos. ;)

What was the most creative shot you took and how did you come up with it?
“I made this photo as we were walking through a golf cart tunnel to get to a beach. I had the bride and groom stop and snuggle up under an overhead light in the centre of the tunnel so that the rings of the tunnel framed them perfectly. This is one of my all time favourite photos.”

Which part of the wedding is your most favourite to shoot and why?
“The bridal prep is one of my most favourite parts of the day. While it can get a little hectic and crazy, there are a lot of emotions buzzing in the room and I can get some really great shots of the bride’s interactions. In this particular photo, the bride’s brother stopped in to give the bride some encouraging words and calm her nerves.”

Where is your favourite place/part of the city to take pictures for a shoot?
“I don’t actually have just one favourite place. One weekend it can be out on a farm or in a backyard garden, the next in the middle of downtown Vancouver. Recently I was in Gastown with a super fun bridal party in a seedy back alley, so right now that is my favourite spot.”

For the techies, what gear do you use?
“I am a Canon girl with my main camera being the 5D. Main lenses include the 24-70 2.8, 85mm 1.8 and 20mm 2.0.”

If you had one piece of advice for a bride and groom, what would it be?
“Delegate! Hire a planner, put your bridesmaids and groomsmen to work, ask for help from friends and family. You are much more likely to enjoy your day to the fullest when you can relax a little bit along the way.”
