Vancity Vendor: Carolyn Egerszegi Photography

Carolyn Egerszegi is a sucker for romance. She loves love, and even better, people in love, further proof that she chose the perfect career for herself. Photography is in Carolyn’s blood, her father and brother are also avid photographers. She chose to pursue the creative side of photography and started taking family portraits. An avid scrapbooker at the time, she told stories through her photos. It wasn’t until her brother got married that she discovered the joy in photographing weddings. She realized what a fun and rewarding experience it was and for over 3 years now, she’s been a part of many Vancouver couples’ special days.

All day coverage packages starts at $2,700 with a 2nd photographer, consultations, site surveys, and a DVD with edited images. Carolyn offers full day coverage because of her desire to tell the whole wedding story from start to finish, and not just focus on the highlights. She is also happy to customize a package to suit any couple’s needs and budget.

Having a personal connection with a client is important to Carolyn, so she encourages everyone to meet up with her and spend some time to get to know each other over a cup of tea. This way, she will have a deeper understanding of you as a couple, which will then translate into her photos. She’ll talk you through the shoot so you’ll feel more comfortable in front of the lens and give lots of feedback… and when she gets excited, you’ll know she got the money shot!

 A Few Words With Carolyn…

What sets you apart from others in the same field?
“What sets me apart is, I think, it has to be a personal connection, either we click or we don’t click. So I really don’t think you would know if I was set apart from someone else until we meet and we get each other, we sit down and we have a cup of tea and share the same vision, same idea, and philosophy about what it means to get married and why you’re even having a wedding day at all. I love to work with couples that are interested in having a marriage than having a wedding, that’s who I want to work with.”

Describe your shooting style.
“I think I’m very relaxed when I shoot. I think people are surprised to learn how easygoing I am and how much fun we have when we’re shooting. I think I’m really good with couples who are camera shy, who feel awkward in front of the camera, I think I have a good talent at bringing out their essence and helping them feel comfortable in front of the camera so I think that’s my style, is relaxed, comfortable.”

Describe your editing style.
“I try to keep my editing as true to life as possible. I want your photos to look just like you remember them that day, so I try not to do too much to the photos. I also don’t want people to look at their photos in 10 or 20 years and think they look of that era. I really want them to look timeless, to just look the way the day looked, and not any artistic version of how I saw the day. Straightforward, authentic, timeless, real.”

Describe one of the most creative shots that you took.
“One photo keeps popping in my mind and it’s a photo of a bride, I would call it a beauty shot. What I love about it is the light on the photo, it just makes her skin look creamy and beautiful. I don’t know what I said to her but something made her have a laugh and her eyes were sparkling in the photo.”

Which part of the wedding is your most favourite to shoot and why?
“It goes without saying that I enjoy the ceremony, I almost always cry during the wedding ceremony, because I’m a romantic, I love vows. I love the getting ready moments. I love a great moment between a mother and a daughter looking at the dress or something. The other favourite part of my day is the speeches. I love speeches because usually the funniest or the most poignant part of the day comes during the speeches, where you get real emotions. I always cry during the speeches too.”

Where is your favourite place to take pictures for a shoot?
“I want to be wherever the nicest light is. If there’s nice light, that’s my favourite place. I like any variety of locations but it’s the light. Ideally Granville Island, because I find the light there seems to be always great. I think Granville Island’s got it all for photography, there’s green space, there’s urban areas, the light is always good, covered areas if it’s raining, it’s a pretty good spot, but mostly my top answer is I just want to be where the best light is.”

If you had one piece of advice to give to the bride and groom, what would it be?
“On the photography side, try and find a photographer who has your enjoyment of your wedding day in mind. I believe my realm of duties on a wedding day, doesn’t exclusively fall within photography. If the bride needs a bottled water and I’m the only one available to get one, I’ll go get one. I don’t just take photos, I do anything I can to help facilitate the day going well. The other piece of advice I can give… I find that the couples that seem to enjoy their wedding day the most are the couples that don’t cram everything and the kitchen sink into their wedding day. So many wonderful wedding blogs have tons of great ideas in them but you can’t do it all. Pick your battles because the simpler your wedding is, the more enjoyable it will be. Focus on what the wedding day is for, the wedding day is so you can marry the love of your life and anything that would contribute to that is what you need to focus on.”
