Vancity Vendor: Dallas Kolotylo Photography

Meet Dallas and Sabrina. Dallas is a self taught photographer who picked up his first camera at the tender age of 10. Sabrina, on the other hand, her interest in photography sparked in high school. The two met and bonded over their common passion and it was only a matter of time before they tied the knot… and then started capturing other couples tying the knot too! They have been at it for over a year now and are excited about working with their new couples in the near future.

Updated: May 25, 2014 – Dallas Kolotylo Photography’s prices have changed since being featured in 2012, as reflected below.

Dallas Kolotylo Photography offers engagement & wedding photography, as well as portrait sessions. Their wedding packages start at $3,500 and includes both Dallas and Sabrina for the full day, from when you ask them to arrive until the end of the evening… or midnight, whichever comes first! You’ll also receive a USB with all the final images, and an online gallery for 6 months. They also provide other services such as a Pre/Post Wedding Day sessions and a Red Carpet style photo-booth for an additional cost. Pre/Post day coverage allows the bride and groom to get all dolled up again in their wedding attire for some extra (no rush) photos at other locations of your choice that couldn’t be done on their actual day. If you know you’ll be strapped for time, this is a good option. If you’d like keepsakes of your special day, albums, canvases, and thank you cards are also available for order.

The Red Carpet style photobooth is an open concept photobooth mixed with an editorial fashion flair. A professional photographer, studio lighting, modern designer backdrops, and a vintage suitcase filled with all kinds of props will bring your photoboothing experience to another level. Their rates for this service starts at $600 for 2 hours.

A Few Words With Dallas & Sabrina…

What do you have to offer for brides with lower budgets?
“Our base price is designed to suit the needs of brides who have a lower budget, to give them the most for their money. We also always offer custom packages to do our best to work with the budgets of any clients who contact us.”

What sets you apart from others in the same field?
“Firstly, our full day coverage! Most wedding photographers will offer a variety of packages with different hourly coverage usually varying between 4 – 10 hours. Our full day coverage literally means full day, they have us for as long as they like and that’s because capturing their whole day is very important to us. The bride and groom never have to worry about time and when we are leaving because we will be there for their whole day. Another difference is that we focus on not being traditional. We believe in truly capturing your day and not interfering, that’s why we describe our style as journalistic. We aren’t going to ask you to pretend to put on your make-up or give your mom a hug for a shot, your day is going to be beautiful and we want to capture the raw emotions that will happen on your day. Another difference is our dramatic style of wedding portraiture, we love epic dramatic shots for portraiture (we hate cheesy traditional poses) and we find that this is what often draws clients to us. Lastly, we are fun! Photography is our passion and we love it! It is not just a business to us and we always have such a great time with all our couples.”

How would you describe your shooting and photo editing style?
“Un-traditional, Journalistic. For our shooting style we prefer to be a fly on the wall and capture the wedding day as it naturally happens, documenting real moments. We edit each of our images one by one and in our editing we simply like to compliment or bring out the real feeling of the photo without over-editing it or completely changing it.  I would describe our editing style as journalistic and emotive with a touch of vintage.”

What do you enjoy most about your job?
“Capturing raw emotions. The wedding day is such an important day for the couple, their friends and their family and there is nothing like documenting a real moment. We also always remark how unique our job is, this is the most important day of someones life and we get to be right there next to them, it’s pretty unique. We also LOVE the portrait sessions with the couple!! We get to take just the two of them and get some really epic shots.”

What was the most creative shot you took and how did you come up with it?
“Sabrina and I talked about this together and we decided that the most creative wedding shot we have so far taken was this one.

To get this shot was really a team effort for us. We were meant to be taking photos at a more typical location (specifically, the beach) but Sabrina had seen this area while we were going to the beach and realized the great potential for a cool shot. So we started gathering everyone to this area and Sabrina and I fine tuned the arrangement. We tried a few different poses but I really loved getting everyone in a sort of stern, almost severe look. It’s pretty uncommon to have that kind of look in wedding photography, but we think it really worked well here. We knew it was a good shot at the time but it really struck us when we put it online, we always get people telling us how unique it is.”

Which part of the wedding is your most favourite to shoot and why?
Sabrina: “The morning getting ready shots, the anticipation and excitement on the brides and grooms face. There is so much going on some who may be camera shy forget we are there and we are able to capture some really great real moments.

Dallas: “The wedding day portraits with the couple are probably my favorite. We always encourage the couple to make some time for us to take just the two of them for some shots alone and we always get really great pictures then. I like the portraits because I find that is where we get a chance to really be creative and work with the couple to make some images that they are going to love.”

Where is your favourite place/part of the city to take pictures for a shoot?
“We always encourage our couples to pick a spot that is special to them (where they first met, were he asked her to marry him etc.) so what is a special spot to photograph for one couple is completely meaningless to another couple. That makes it hard to pick out one spot for us.
Sabrina: If I had to pick one we would say natural settings, in a big grassy field or in the forest.
Dallas: I love urban scenes, there are some really cool alleys and walls around Gastown, and I really love antique alley in New West.”

If you had one piece of advice for a bride and groom, what would it be?
“Stay true to yourself, be real and show your personality! For some reason the wedding day for a lot of brides and grooms tends to be a day where they dress up as someone else and have a huge party for everyone else to enjoy except themselves. Your wedding day is about the love between you and your new husband/wife, don’t forget that. If your husband asked you to marry you under an old oak tree and that’s where you want to get married, get married under that oak tree! If you want to wear a pink dress to your wedding, wear a pink dress! This is your day, just be yourself and don’t be pressured to conform to what everyone else is doing for there wedding. Also even though your uncle bob can take some good photos don’t ask him to take all your wedding photos. After your wedding day, all you have to remember that day is your photos so make sure you hire a professional and don’t forget to have fun!”

Last year, when I first got engaged, the first two things I wanted to book right away were venue and photographer. Venue didn’t take long but I had trouble finding a photographer. I just want to thank you for featuring Dallas and Sabrina. The photos you featured were exactly what I was looking for. When I met with Dallas and Sabrina, I knew right away that I wanted them… The engagement photos were absolutely amazing. We had our dog in the session and of course, there were slobber marks and dog hair all over my dark dress, but I asked them not to photoshop it out…and it was perfect. Dallas and Sabrina really captured the moments exactly how we wanted. And the photo booth photos were uploaded really soon after the wedding! The guests were all so impressed with them! Now that I have all the photos from the wedding, I’ve got to say, I would recommend them to EVERYONE I know. Not only are the photos perfect, Dallas and Sabrina were so easy to work with that most of the time, I didn’t even notice them there! Even my makeup artist was impressed! This is all thanks to your feature. I don’t see any baby photo shoots on Dallas Kolotylo’s website but guess who I’m gonna call the second I’m pregnant?=) ok ok, maybe after we call our parents but…you know what I mean=)
