Vancity Vendor – Grace Photography

Grace Photography

When I went to the last Vancouver Wedding and Honeymoon Show, I got a chance to meet a lot of people in the wedding industry. Carey Côté was one of them. For 6 years, he’s been photographing weddings exclusively, but his experience with a camera started long before that. Photography was once just a hobby for him, but Carey gradually made it into his career. He used to shoot for the Vancouver Sun and Province, but eventually left that to complete a film degree at BCIT. After being asked by his peers to photograph their weddings, he discovered his true passion and Grace Photography was born.

His services include full day wedding coverage, destination weddings, and other photoshoots such as boudoir, “Trash the Dress” and maternity. He also has a wide variety of products you can order post-photoshoot, like hard cover albums, canvas gallery wraps, and photo enlargements. Carey assures me that he is always expanding his product line and offering new services, so I would keep an eye on his website for announcements.

Grace Photography’s base wedding package costs $2100 and includes one photographer to cover the full day, up to 14 hours of coverage. The couple will also receive 300 4×6 proofs, a 10×13 hard bound printed album that contains up to 120 images of your choice, and a DVD of ready-to-print images. A second shooter will add at least another $400 cost, that’s $100 per hour with a minimum 4 hour booking. Proofs and digital files from the second shooter are included in this price. Look out for Carey at wedding shows because he usually has some special promotions for brides who attend.

Carey currently works out of his home, which he says helps keep the costs down for clients. If a studio is required, he can easily make that happen, thanks to the good relationship he has with other photographers in the area. The initial consultation involves an in depth look at Carey’s work and figuring out which package best suits the clients’ needs and budget. Carey is a Canon man, a 5D MK II, to be exact, and capturing your unforgettable memories is what he lives for.

A Few Words With Carey…

What do you have to offer for brides with lower budgets?
“I am available for half days on selected dates each year.  I also build unique packages for Brides with specific needs.”

What sets you apart from others in the same field?
“I put myself through film school by bartending, so I have this ability to get along well with people and the greatest comment I continually receive from clients is that not only do they love my work but they want to include me in their wedding day because I am so fun and easy to get along with.  From a technical standpoint I have learned from a wide variety of film industry experts and incorporate this into every shot I take.”

What do you enjoy most about your job?
“I love being around people that are in great spirits and I have never found an event that equals a wedding for this.”

What was the most creative shot you took and how did you come up with it?
“Every wedding I shoot, I always find shots I am proud of.  One of my favorite shots was of a bride who wore a very long veil, I was hoping to catch a shot of her with the veil blowing in the wind, but it was such a calm day I had to resort to the best man standing in the shot holding the veil up in the air letting it go and jumping out of the way the moment before the camera clicked.”

Which part of the wedding is your most favourite to shoot and why?
“I love taking the portraits of the Bride and Groom at different stages throughout the day.  I want to make sure that the couple have a lot of portraits to commemorate the special day, as I know it will be one of theses portraits that they will share the most with family and friends.”

Where is your favourite place/part of the city to take pictures for a shoot?
“I love Vancouver, so many beautiful locations, Queen Elizabeth Park, Stanley Park the Seawall or Gastown to name a few.  But as a Destination wedding photographer for $150 a couple can get married at San Francisco City Hall which is probably the most romantic, beautiful building I have ever photographed inside.”

Do you draw inspiration from other photographers?
“It is nice to be inspired by a beautiful photograph, however while I am shooting a wedding the real inspiration comes from the people I am spending the day with as well as the surroundings like a beautiful sunset.”

If you had one piece of advice for a bride and groom, what would it be?
“When you said ‘Yes’ to your spouse, you didn’t have to think about it, you just knew it was right.  Treat every aspect of your wedding day like that moment, just go with it.”
