Vancity Vendor: Green Pomme Photography

Melissa Liu’s love for photography started back when she was only 15 years old. She enjoyed taking photos of everything and took her trusty camera everywhere she went including her travels to Asia, Europe and throughout North America. One day, she met her friend, Reine Mihtla of Reine Weddings. It was she who inspired Melissa to become a wedding photographer and mentored her to become the successful shooter she is now. In 2006, Melissa founded Green Pomme Photography. Why Green Pomme? I asked Melissa… to which she replied, “I wanted to GO GREEN!

Melissa’s packages start at $2,500, which includes 6 hours of coverage. All packages include an associate photographer, a password protected gallery and high-resolution images on DVD’s. Other collections include an engagement session and credit towards other photography products like albums, canvases and/or prints. Contact Melissa to inquire.

Melissa loves to take advantage of natural light to enhance the look of her photos. She likes to keep her images fresh, modern & true to itself by keeping post-processing to a minimum. If you like her photos, book a free consultation and Melissa will gladly chat with you over coffee (or tea!) to talk about your needs. As a former bride, she’s been through the wedding planning stress before and will be able to provide guidance along the way. Melissa says she only takes a limited amount of weddings each year to ensure that her clients will receive the highest quality of work as possible… so book fast!

Cans 4 Comments

This December, Melissa is holding a Cans 4 Comments fundraising effort, except, instead of cans, she will donate $1 per comment made on her blog to the Greater Vancouver Food Bank. Help make a difference this holiday season by simply commenting on Melissa’s post, as well as other local Vancouver photographers taking part in this initiative (you’ll see the list on her site).

A Few Words With Melissa…

What do you have to offer for brides with lower budgets?
“I offer exactly the same thing to any budget brides!  To me, there are no low or high budgets! I’ll be creative and capture the day. It doesn’t matter if you book 4 hours or 12 hours. However, should the couple decide not to include a custom design album in the package, that’s totally understandable!! I don’t believe in selling the couple’s images back to them.  So, images on the DVD are all edited and the couple can take the DVD anywhere to get printed. If you ask, I may even tell you where I get my photos printed professionally in town! Some collections include a $250 credit toward prints, albums, canvas when order $825 plus. And the credit is good for 1 year after the wedding.”

What sets you apart from others in the same field?
“Every photographer is unique. However, I tell every one that I’m not just a wedding photographer as I’m a storyteller! When you look at my work, you’ll notice I use natural light, not too much photo shop needed into my work. You’ll also note my collage photo style, which was featured on Real Weddings Magazine Spring 2010. All clients will receive 2-3 collages as a bonus on their DVD!”

What do you enjoy most about your job?
“I LOVE my job every singe day, and every minute of it! I can’t pinpoint what I enjoy the most.  During the portraits time, it’s just the couple and me and that’s why we get to know each other via numbers of emails, coffee meetings, and engagement session.  But I’ve also loved the ceremonies and speeches which some of them brought tears to my eyes.”

What was the most creative shot you took and how did you come up with it?
“It’s so limited when it comes to photograph wedding party photos. For this couple, we want something that’s different than walking, jumping as all others. So I came up with the ‘running’ shot.  But this time, I made the wedding parties and 2 ring bears to run as fast as they can in circle around the wedding couple. It’s pretty hard to run in your flip-flops in sand AND in circles! But we did it and I love how it turned out!”

Where is your favourite place/part of the city to take pictures for a shoot?
“I don’t really have a favourite place. Throughout the years, I learned to be creative at any location and lighting situation. However, if you really want me to pick, I love Gastown and Granville Island!”

For the techies, what gear do you use?
“Nikon. Always with 2 camera bodies and numbers of lens. It is so important to have at least 2 camera bodies for back-up reasons!”

If you had one piece of advice for a bride and groom, what would it be?
“The most important thing is just to relax, have fun and enjoy your wedding day. Whatever happens, let it happen! We are there not only to capture the moment, we are also there to share your big day with you. It’s your day, make it yours!”
