Vancity Vendor: Had to Be You Weddings

Had to Be You Weddings At 9 years old, Vancouver wedding photographer Laura McGuire already had a camera in her hands. Her father gave it to her as a gift and it became her most prized possession, spending her allowances on film and processing. It’s safe to say this little girl was hooked. She eventually moved out of her hometown of Athabasca, Alberta to study film in beautiful BC. After some time in the movie industry, her urge to become an entrepreneur took over and decided to quit the business and start a new one… in wedding photography. This hopeless romantic has finally found her path and has been loving it for the last couple years and counting.

Laura McGuire of Had to Be You Weddings

Had to Be You Weddings offers wedding photography services as well as artistic and family portraits. Packages start around $2,400 (6 hours) and go up to $3,200 (9 hours). You will receive digital prints as well as a gift of 15 4×6 prints for you to enjoy right away. She describes her shooting and editing style as delicate and dark, but as you can see, it translates really well in her images. Soft, with a bit of edge.

A Few Words With Laura…

What do you have to offer for brides with lower budgets?
“For brides with lower budgets, I am always happy to make things work with the right people. If you really want some nice portraits, we can always do an engagement shoot ($775) which is a nice and affordable way of capturing great moments with you and your partner!”

Had to Be You Weddings What sets you apart from others in the same field?
“I think what sets me apart from other wedding photographers is probably my personality! I am a bit of a goof, am always having a good time and really take the time to get to know my clients. I am not really into “posing” shots…I’m more of a natural and candid photographer. A lot of couples laugh that I am a bit of a spy when I shoot, as I am often far away, or I am hiding behind a bush to get the shot! Ha ha!”

What do you enjoy most about your job?
“There are so many things I love about my job, but I suppose the thing I enjoy the most would be giving the final photos to my clients. It is so rewarding to see them smile and squeal with excitement when they view them. I feel very lucky that I can make people that happy.”

What was the most creative shot you took and how did you come up with it?
“I suppose the most unique shot I have taken, would probably be when I lined up the bride and all of her bridesmaids hands to display their hand henna. I thought it looked pretty cool. It’s nice to get the little detail shots, sometimes they are overlooked…but it’s nice to remember them!”

Which part of the wedding is your most favourite to shoot and why?
“My favourite part of the wedding to shoot would be when I am alone with the couple. It’s usually after the ceremony and they are super relaxed and pretty euphoric. It comes out in the photos for sure.”

Where is your favourite place/part of the city to take pictures for a shoot?
“I really love vibrant walls and colours, but I also really love shooting in nature! My favourite place so far in Vancouver to shoot would probably be in Deep Cove or Lighthouse Park.”

Do you draw inspiration from other photographers?
“I am definitely inspired by the many photographers around the world. I am particularly drawn to portrait photographers as well as travel photographers; somehow they are the ones that are able to capture the true essence of a moment.”

What should your clients expect when they have their first consultation with you?
“My clients should expect to laugh with me! I am pretty bubbly and want to know everything about you. I am very open-minded, easy going and eager to make you smile.”

If you had one piece of advice for a bride and groom, what would it be?
“My words of wisdom on the wedding day would be to just have fun and don’t sweat the small stuff. The day goes by so fast so try to enjoy it. Oh, and breathe!”
