Vancity Vendor: Jarusha Brown Photography

At 23, Jarusha Brown decided to pack her bags and explore the world. She brought back unforgettable stories, experiences, and lots and lots of photos. Friends and family saw her talent behind the lens and that’s when Jarusha realized that maybe a career in photography was for her. She started job shadowing a photographer in her hometown of Naramata, BC and eventually moved to Calgary to take the 4 year program at the Alberta College of Art and Design. She found their program to be the most technically sound out of all the programs she looked at, and as a bonus, it was close to the mountains, convenient for an avid skier such as herself!

Photographing people has always been the most interesting for her, but it never occurred to her to pursue wedding photography until she started shadowing a Calgary-based wedding photographer. She loved how she got to document the entire day and even get a little creative when it comes to doing the formals. It also allowed her to combine her interests in photojournalism and fine art shooting.

Jarusha Brown Photography does primarily wedding and family shoots, with a side of commercial work here and there. All of Jarusha’s packages include an engagement shoot, an assistant photographer who shoots candids, disc of high resolution, retouched images, and a credit for use towards add-ons. Her introductory package is $3,000 for 6 hours of coverage. She scouts different locations for the engagement session and wedding photoshoot and tailors it to her clients’ personalities. As add-ons, she offers prints, canvases, albums, and eventually she’ll start including signing books and offer boudoir with “little black book” albums for you to keep. It takes about 4 weeks for clients to receive their disc of images and see the rough draft of their wedding album. After getting the clients’ approval on the album, it takes about 4-6 weeks for it to be created. Consultations are a great way for you and Jarusha to get to know each other, it will also allow her to customize packages to fit your budget.

A Few Words With Jarusha…

What do you have to offer for brides with lower budgets?
“I would say my starting package includes a lot and it starts at $3,000 but with that you’re getting a full meal deal. I wanted to make packages where everybody would get everything. With that initial package, it could potentially cover every important bit of the day, depending on their schedule, and they get an album with that and an engagement session. I hope to offer budget brides the full meal deal so they don’t have to worry about adding this and that to it.”

What sets you apart from other photographers?
“I’d like to think that my personality is a big thing and that’s another good thing about meeting face to face with clients beforehand is that if our personalities don’t mesh, then it’s probably for the best that we don’t work together. But for the most part I get fantastic, in fact, all my clients have been fantastic. I think my personality just attracts those kinds of people. I have a really good ability to put people at ease in front of the camera, because unless you’re a model you don’t like to have your photos taken as much, I know I’m like that, that’s why I’m behind the camera. I take a lot of pride in my style, I want to be able to wow the bride and groom.”

What do you enjoy most about your job?
“I love meeting new people and hearing their stories and seeing the love between them, whether it’s a family and how much the children are loved and how happy they are together or a couple on their wedding day.”

What’s the most creative shot you took and how did you come up with it?
“I feel like almost every wedding has a couple shots where I’m like YES! and they’re always a little bit different because the locations are always different. There was a wedding I did in Calgary where we went into a parkade of all places, it had a really cool design, it had a glass ceiling for part of it, concrete underneath and wooden beams across so when the light was shining in there were these really cool lines on the concrete so I got the wedding party to stand in there and that I thought was just really cool, very modern.”

Which part of the wedding is your most favourite to shoot and why?
“Probably the formals actually, just because I get to have the wedding party or just the bride and groom all to myself and we get to do those really creative shots, those artistic shots. I enjoy that.”

What is your favourite place to shoot and why?
“There’s so many great places around Vancouver it’s just so amazing. I feel like there’s way more spots here than there is in Calgary. I like the downtown area, I am a big fan of the new Convention Centre because there’s so much there, there’s so much glass and concrete, metal, and Stanley Park has a lot to offer too.”

Do you draw inspiration from other photographers?
“I used to obsessively look at other photographers’ work all the time to get inspiration and I kind of stopped doing that as much. For the most part, I get inspiration from magazines or from off my head.”

If you had one piece of advice for the bride and groom, what would it be?
“I’d say if you’re uncomfortable about being in front of a camera, an engagement session is a must for sure. Especially guys, guys are always afraid that it’s gonna be really painful, like a firing squad type of thing so to get them comfortable in front of the camera and realize that it’s gonna be fun and it’s not gonna be an awful experience, that will make your day probably a little bit easier too.”
