Vancity Vendor: Jennifer Kirk Photography

Vancouver wedding photographer Jennifer Kirk calls the start of her career a “happy mistake.” It all began when a friend asked Jennifer to photograph her destination wedding, to which Jennifer obliged and ended up enjoying the whole experience! She then met a reputable photographer at a wedding show and ended up working as her assistant. Things just fell into the right place for her and in 2005, she shot her first wedding and never turned back.

Jennifer Kirk Photography captures it all, from engagements to weddings to maternity, newborn, and family portraits. Wedding commissions start at $2,500 and includes a 2nd photographer, private online viewing gallery, fully enhanced high resolution files and 100 thank-you cards. Open concept photobooths are also available to jazz up your event. Each wedding is different, so Jennifer will gladly customize packages for you. There are 3 album choices available with her packages and Jennifer prides herself in creating each album unique and meaningful to each couple she works with.

Jennifer has a background in film photography which, she says, has given her a solid understanding of the craft. This allows her to properly execute under difficult situations and have confidence in her abilities that her photographs have turned out beautifully.

Keep up with Jennifer’s latest work on her website, blog, and Facebook page or say hello to her on Twitter!

It just so happens that Jennifer’s birthday is tomorrow (March 10th) so let’s all wish her a very happy birthday :)

A Few Words With Jennifer…

What do you have to offer for brides with lower budgets?
“Sometimes it’s possible to drop the 2nd photographer for smaller, intimate weddings. Other couples opt to drop the thank-you cards, especially if they are having less than 100 guests! I’m flexible with pricing for off-season dates or weekday weddings.”

What sets you apart from others in the same field?
“The experience and service you can expect on the wedding day. I’ve never been a photographer who just shows up and floats through the day. I meet with my couples when the wedding is 2 weeks away to go over their itinerary, and when they are with me for the duration of the day, they are taken care of. I make sure we get the photos they need under any time restraint, and that they are back on time for the reception. And that we have fun doing it!”

What do you enjoy most about your job?
“Spending my work days with happy, celebrating people. My clients are people I really connect with on a personal level, so we get along and enjoy the day together. I meet some absolutely fantastic people with this job, and build relationships that last beyond the wedding day.”

How would you describe your shooting style?
“My shooting style is to pick a location that offers some variety and just go for a walk. I’m often thanked by the bride & groom or members of the wedding party at the end of the night for not putting them through 2hrs of boredom, that they enjoyed the shoot, since it just felt like hanging out with their friends. The photo session should be fun… it makes for better images that way too!”

What was the most creative shot you took and how did you come up with it?
“It’s hard to pick just one, but this one stands out. The bride and groom performed a sultry dance to Nina Simone’s Feeling Good and I used off camera flash to illuminate the décor behind them, stunning vases from Granville Island Florist. I wanted to create a dramatic image to match this part of the day.”

Which part of the wedding is your most favourite to shoot and why?
“Time spent with just the bride and groom is definitely my favourite, especially if the timeline provides a little time for them to slow down, and enjoy the newness of being married! This simple shot holds a lot of meaning to the couple, they got engaged on the West Coast Trail. Having a few quiet minutes to create some photos with their hiking boots on gave them some time to relax and breathe away from the craziness.”

Where is your favourite place/part of the city to take pictures for a shoot?
“Downtown Vancouver. So many areas provide surprises, like this shot taken on Hornby Street. It’s hard to believe that this was taken in the middle of downtown Vancouver!”

Do you draw inspiration from other photographers?
“Rarely… perhaps if I see a great pose I’d like to try but that’s about it. I prefer to create a unique set of images for each and every client, based on the way the light looks on their particular day, or the things we happen upon during the shoot that make it ‘theirs’ and part of the experience.”

What should your clients expect when they have their first consultation with you?
“Expect a hands-on experience with the products available, for your questions to be answered as we chat throughout the meeting, and to get to know each other a little bit better. It’s important for both sides to feel a level of comfort to work together for a seamless wedding day. Oh, and expect that I will buy your coffee, tea, or whatever. I like my clients to be well taken care of!”

If you had one piece of advice for a bride and groom, what would it be?
“Choose a photographer you get along with, and trust. Trust is key, if you can place your trust in the photographer to guide you through the day so that you can just ENJOY it, you’ll have the amazing photographs afterwards to remember it.  Your enjoyment of the day will definitely show in the photos!”
