JLS Photography

This week’s Vancity Vendor is a Surrey photographer named Jen Sutherland. She’s been in the business for 6 years. Armed with her trusty Nikon D700, she captures moments that span an entire life cycle, from newborns to children’s portraits to engagement sessions to wedding photos to maternity… and everything else in between.

JLS Photography‘s pricing starts at $1600 for 4 hours of coverage. This includes a DVD of digital images, a link to an online gallery shortly after the wedding for the client to choose 30 images for specific editing. An additional photographer costs extra.

Jen works from her studio in Surrey. If you get a chance to set up an appointment with her, expect a friendly chat, a chance for both of you to get to know each other. Show her which images of hers you like so she can get an idea of what style you’re going for. Last but not least, let her know what you expect from her during your wedding, that way you can all figure out the best way to cover your day.

A Few Words with Jen…

What sets you apart from others in the same field?
“I think all photographers have a unique fingerprint on their images… the style that they capture, the mood, the editing… so much goes into the whole process.  What I love about my work is that I really feel that I can connect with people quickly, get to know you and the little things that make you… you!  That way I can capture you at ease, naturally and having fun.  I find so many people who tell me “I hate having my picture taken” after the sessions telling me how much fun they had and that they actually felt comfortable!  That’s the greatest compliment!  It’s a gift to be able to work with all walks of life and I think I have that.”

Do you draw inspiration from other photographers?
“Of course!  This is how you grow, learn, try new things!  I’ve been lucky enough to follow behind one of Vancouver’s most amazing wedding photographers, Reine of www.reineweddings.ca She has been amazing to watch and learn from over the years and I’ve drawn incredible inspriation from her work!”

Which part of the wedding is your most favourite to shoot and why?
“My most favorite would have to be….the portraits – I love the creativity that you can pull into capturing the bride and groom on their big day… having fun with the girls and getting the guys doing what they do best.”

Where is your favourite place to take pictures for a shoot?
“I dont have a favorite honestly… I love outdoors as I prefer to shoot with natural light, but every wedding is so different that even at the same location it can feel like a completely different venue!  The colours, layout, decor…. all add and change the feel to an event.”

What was the most creative shot you took and how did you come up with it?
“Hummm how to pick just one?  I feel that all of my shoots are creative, each unique.  I draw the energy and ideas from the people themselves – trying to create something that is something special to them, who they are.”

What do you enjoy most about your job?
“The people!  The reactions!  Ohhhh I love hearing comments and hearing people get so excited over their images.  Telling me how happy they are and that I’ve captured things they didn’t even know happened.  Your wedding day can be such a blur, so it’s my job to pick out all the little things, the details, expressions, tears and laughter so that when looking back you can put all the puzzle pieces together!”

If you had one piece of advice for a bride and groom, what would it be?
“I always say that the connection with your photographer is a big part of your decision.  Remember, you will be spending up to 10 hours with this person on one of the most important days of your life.  You need to feel comfortable around them so that you can almost forget they are there! Also, look at that budget… decide if inviting those 10 extra people are worth better photos or not, being able to afford the photographer you want over having that distant relative or friend you rarely talk to coming to your wedding.”
