Vancity Vendor: Joanna Moss Photography

Joanna Moss Joanna Moss used to be a graphic designer but she always had a special place in her heart for photography. She started off shooting headshots for clients, but living out of the country inspired her to shoot more. She soon realized that her passion for photography exceeded that of a hobby and decided to start her own business. Clearly it’s been a success as she had just completed her fifth wedding season.

Joanna Moss Photography offers engagement, wedding and lifestyle photography services. Clients receive their photographs via digital download, DVD, or USB and they also have photobook options you can order. Half day wedding packages start at $1,550 and includes 1 photographer for 5 hours, an engagement session, online gallery, and a DVD of their edited photos. Full day packages start at $2,350 and includes the same features as the half day with an extra photographer and 8 hours of coverage instead of 5. If you’re having a very intimate wedding (20 people or less, including the bridal party), Joanna also has Elopement packages that start at $775 with 2.5 hours of wedding day coverage, a mini engagement session and DVD of edited photographs.

A Few Words With Joanna…

Why did you want to become a wedding photographer?
“I love weddings! I love the excitement, the joy, the love. I love all the details that brides put their heart into, I love the look on the grooms face when he sees the bride for the first time, I love the dresses, and the tears of joy.”

What do you have to offer for brides with lower budgets?
“I am always happy to meet with brides with all different budgets because I believe every bride should have a beautiful portrait on her wedding day. My elopement package is perfect for brides with a small wedding and a small budget.”

Joanna Moss Photography What sets you apart from others in the same field?
“My attention to detail sets me apart from other photographers. I love all of the little details in the weddings from the dress, the shoes, flowers, hair jewels, centerpieces, cakes and all of the bling.”

How would you describe your shooting and photo editing style?
“My style of photography is lifestyle and unobtrusive; unobtrusive style means that I deliver very natural photographs, candid’s of guests and family laughing and enjoying the day; natural and real emotion captured. Lifestyle portraits are modern and elegant. Although we do some posed photographs my favorites are always the photos that I capture between portraits when the bride and groom are having a little special moment; a smile, a kiss, holding hands, it’s beautiful.”

Joanna Moss Photography What do you enjoy most about your job?
“I love being a part of couples special days, I also love being able to deliver to them memories that will always be with them, and show them the joy and laughter that they may have missed because the day sure goes fast!”

What was the most creative shot you took and how did you come up with it?
“My favorite photograph is a group photograph I took this year; it was actually featured on the SnapKnot.com and Nordrstom Wedding Blogs. It is a group shot where the bridal party and couple are shaped in a heart, I took the photo from above. I love it!”

Joanna Moss Photography Which part of the wedding is your most favourite to shoot and why?
“I love shooting the ceremony because everything is natural, the emotions are real. The groom seeing his bride walk down the aisle, dad giving his daughter the last words of wisdom before they enter the room, mom watching her daughter saying her vows, the secret smiles between the bride and groom, and the Kiss.”

Where is your favourite place/part of the city to take pictures for a shoot?
“I love shooting in downtown Vancouver; between the Bayshore and the convention centre and in Gastown.”

Joanna Moss Photography If you had one piece of advice for a bride and groom, what would it be?
“Don’t plan long travel distances between your ceremony, portraits and reception. You don’t need the stress of wondering if you are going to be late because traffic will not cooperate, parking will be impossible to find, especially on summer months on the weekends. If you are travelling by limo make sure your limo driver knows where he is going and how to get there; if you can, take your photographer with you in the limo to the portrait location so they don’t have to drive around looking for parking.”
