Vancity Vendor –
Magna Vita Photography

Magna Vita Photography

Bini Ball of Magna Vita Photography is just emerging into the wedding industry, but don’t get her wrong… She has the same passion for the craft a seasoned pro has. Cameras have been a part of her life since childhood, and by the time she turned 18, she saved up enough money to buy herself her first camera. A career in photojournalism was her dream but life took her to a different path, to an equally fulfilling career in wedding photography. To date, she has shot at least 14 weddings, with more to come in the upcoming months.

Not only does she do event photography, she also does portraits, sports, and food photography. You might remember her beautiful marshmallow images from Kimberley’s Kitchen’s Vancity Vendor profile. She works out of her Surrey-based studio, which she says is perfect for headshots, portraits and product photography.

Magna Vita Photography’s 6-hour wedding package is only $950 and includes an engagement session, all edited images on a DVD, and an online gallery. She also has a special perk for couples who book her all-day package: the choice between a credit towards a photobook or a videographer that she works with called Topside Productions. If need be, a second photographer can be added to the package at an extra cost. For brides who are REALLY on a budget, she offers special rates for mid-week, off-season or even last minute deals that can go as low as $450.

Update – August 3, 2012: Magna Vita’s prices have increased since posting this feature last year. Her 8 hour package is $2,900 & includes credits towards prints/books. Other full day packages are available. Contact her to inquire.

A Few Words With Bini…

What do you have to offer for brides with lower budgets?
“On the budget scale – I am already priced at the very affordable range especially when you consider the quality, number of images, additional editing, and engagement shoot.  For brides on a very strict budget – they can decide how many hours coverage they want and also what coverage is the most critical to have a professional photographer in attendance. Friends & family usually have cameras and are happy to take candids so you don’t always have to include the reception in your package. Some venues only allow non-flash photography by one photographer – if this is the case – Brides should ensure they are buying a package that reflects the most technically challenging and critical moments of their day. And keeping an eye out for discounts (days of the week, time of the year, and early bookings) can save brides a lot of money without compromising coverage.”

What sets you apart from others in the same field?
“At this point in my career, I would say its my business approach rather than my photography. I am 100% customer service driven: I respond promptly to emails, I communicate clearly the services being offered, I respect my customer’s needs, and I listen to their expectations, and above all I work hard. In today’s digital world, I don’t want my clients getting their first wedding photos from their friend’s phone camera and that really changes my approach to photography, editing and workflow.”

How would you describe your photo editing style?
“Bold colours and deep blacks are something I always work towards in my photos. I also like creating collages of images because sometimes the whole story is more powerful when you place photos together.”

What do you enjoy most about your job?
I just love going through the photos after the wedding. I can relive the excitement, the stress, the emotions, the passion, the laughs. I can feel the wedding no matter how many years ago the photos were taken – there is just something intangible that passes from that photo through time.”

What was the most creative shot you took and how did you come up with it?
“Looking at this photo you may not find it creative – it lacks Himalayan-like mountains, or Hawaiian-like beaches and other eye-popping scenery. But whats important about this shot is that it was done in the stairwell of the bride’s house. I like it because it says that you can make any location spectacular regardless of the budget.”

Which part of the wedding is your most favourite to shoot and why?
“I love working the candids during the reception. This is when I can hide in the shadows and capture the life of the party – I set myself a goal – to take at least one beautiful, meaningful photo of each guest. All day long, I watched the groom’s father – a serious man – even during the formal photos – I could barely wink a grin out of him – and then – for just a split second at the reception I caught that elusive smile. Its moments like these that make every cramped finger worth it.”

Where is your favourite place/part of the city to take pictures for a shoot?
“I like blending buildings with water. Both are timeless and most will still stand long after our memories have faded.”

What should your clients expect when they have their first consultation with you?
We will chat about the type of photography they are looking for and what their expectations are from me. We always go through my photobooks and printed portfolio to get clues as to the styles they like. When booking weddings I offer to hold their wedding date for 2 weeks without a deposit; this allows them the time to meet with other photographers, book venues and catering without worrying about losing their date with me.”

Do you have plans on expanding your services?
I am always working on new projects but with weddings in mind – I love doing bridal showers & stagette parties. Normally you might hope family & friends will snap a few memorable pics of reasonable quality – but as the event photographer – I take all the photos of everyone having fun, maybe acting a bit crazy, and put them together onto a DVD for everyone to share & print – best of all at affordable prices.”

What gear do you use?
My primary is a Nikon D700 and my backup is a D70. I have some very sweet 2.8 lenses and a recent birthday present – a lens baby. I use a flash but for some clients, if they need a backdrop, I usually use hot lights.”

If you had one piece of advice for a bride and groom, what would it be?
“I would suggest Brides/Grooms allow for about 2hrs of photography per location for the formals. The photos are always the event that is rushed – squeezed in between the ceremony & the dinner – but the photos are the lasting reminder of your day – and you don’t want to look back and wish you had more pictures.”

I was just recently married July 22 2011 & Bini was one of the photographers at my wedding. I was very impressed with her work. She captured every moment there was to capture. She put in alot of effort in so many ways. Directing mass groups of people, prescopeing out locations for each group of people, chaseing around the impossible to photograph guests, putting her own unique spin on images to give a real creative look, and so much more. I would definately recommend her to you for your wedding. What ever it is you want she will make sure you get it.

We were married November 2005 and Bini was our photographer. Six years later as I look back at the photos, they are just as beautiful as the work she does today. She really listened to us and created a photography plan that meshed with what we had in mind. The end result were timeless photos that captured the fine moments of our day…Thank you Bini….

    Kimberley Mulla says:

Bini has taken amazing photos of my family for a Christmas card portrait and for our daughters’ birthday party. Every time she has managed to capture the essence of the day so beautifully and skillfully edits the images. She often has some preliminary images very soon after to give you a sense of what they will look like and she has provided the complete set of images very quickly (with many photographers you can be left waiting for months). Above all, she is a wonderful person to have at your event and manages her business with the utmost professionalism. I would highly recommend her!

Bini is an amazing photographer! The pictures that Bini took at our wedding captured everything that’s in my memory and more! There were precious moments that I, as a bride, missed, but Bini showed them to me!

Bini had such a great eye for details and was invisible while she’s working the candids – I never knew where Bini was or whether she’s taking pictures during the ceremony and the reception. Yet when it came to taking group pictures, Bini was cheerful, energetic, and so efficient at gathering and organizing people. We are really amazed how well her photos captured everything so beautifully and naturally. There are stunningly beautiful and precious photos that we will treasure forever. We are glad to have the photos to tell our stories for us.

We are extremely happy that we chose Bini, it was one of the best decisions we made for our wedding!
