Vancity Vendor -
Magnolia Photographic + Contest!

June 29th, 2012 by Jeannine

Vancity Vendor: Magnolia Photographic

Laura Stapleton was only 12 when she first held her father’s SLR camera, and from that moment, she knew it would never leave her hands. Laura took the photography program at Langara College and got a job at a professional photo lab. She was inspired by the fun, fashion-influenced images by local wedding photographers that came across her desk and eventually became a wedding photographer herself, and a successful one at that! Magnolia Photographic is entering their 10th year in 2012 with over 150 weddings under her belt!

Magnolia Photographic provides a variety of services including weddings, boudoir, maternity, baby and family photography. Laura only accepts a limited number of wedding commissions per year in order to avoid becoming a “cookie-cutter” photographer. She says it allows her to keep her creativity fresh and each event is treated with all the attention it deserves. All wedding packages include two professional photographers, high resolution images on disc, online gallery of all images, proof booklet, and a product credit (which can be used towards a custom designed album, prints, and more). Packages start at $2,995 and includes 5 hours of coverage and a $500 product credit.

Boudoir is Laura’s other passion. She offers “Secret Sessions” to brides-to-be or any other woman who wants to feel empowered and bring out her inner goddess. Laura’s Richmond office space doubles as a beautiful boudoir studio. Boudoir can be quite intimidating so to keep her clients comfortable, Laura engages them in conversation to help take the edge off. Don’t worry about not knowing how to pose, Laura will direct you every step of the way. Her packages start at $295 and includes a 1 hour session and $100 in product credit.

A Few Words With Laura…

Why did you want to take on boudoir?
“I started shooting boudoir about six years ago, just when it was catching on. I really felt that it was such an empowering thing for a woman to do, and I wanted to deliver that experience for my clients. After my first session, I realized I had so much fun that it didn’t even feel like work, and to top it off, my client told me how much of a confidence booster the session had been for her. Since then I’ve photographed around 200 gorgeous ladies (and a man or two as well!)”

What do you have to offer for brides with lower budgets?
“First of all, I believe everybody should have great photography to document their major life events! To that end, I do offer reduced-rate custom packages for brides with weddings happening Monday – Thursday and during non-peak season (November – March). For boudoir, I do offer mini-sessions for $150, which include a 30 minute session, one outfit, and one custom enhanced 8×12 print.”

What sets you apart from others in the same field?
“What sets me apart from other wedding and boudoir photographers is experience. I’ve been a professional photographer for 10 years now, and the experience has really helped me hone my craft and client experience. With weddings, experience is important because it helps you learn to anticipate moments – the mom crying as her daughter comes up the aisle, the brief loving looks exchanged between the couple during the ceremony, etc. With boudoir, experience is important because you learn to know which angles, poses, and lighting work best for different body types.”

How would you describe your shooting and photo editing style?
“My shooting style for both weddings, portraits, and boudoir is relaxed and fashion-influenced. I try not to overly pose too much, but rather give the client the general idea and let them go with it. Of course, I’m always there to help more when needed! As for editing, I go through each image myself and choose the very best ones for my clients – I prefer to give them hundreds of great images, instead of thousands of mediocre images.”

What do you enjoy most about your job?
“The people. Talking to people, hearing about their life stories, learning about someone’s personal experiences, their motivations and goals. People are interesting and inspiring, and I’ve been so lucky to have my life enriched through photographing the lives of others.”

What was the most creative shot you took and how did you come up with it?
“It’s very difficult to pick just one photo as my most creative shot, as I try to be creative with every image I shoot. I guess I would say that a challenging situation really charges my creativity, and that’s why I’ve chosen this image. This was from a wedding last May, on a day where it was absolutely pouring rain and hailing. For indoor locations, we basically had the bride and groom’s hotel room at the Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel, and that was about it! We worked that room for every angle possible, getting a great variety of images despite the limited space – this is my favourite from the series.”

Which part of the wedding is your most favourite to shoot and why?
“My favourite part of the wedding to photograph is definitely the photo shoot with the bride and groom. This is sort of my alone time with them, and I like taking everything down a notch and just having a fun, relaxing photo session with them. A lot of clients have told me that this has been one of their favourite parts of the day too!”

Where is your favourite place/part of the city to take pictures for a shoot?
“I have many favourite places, but if I had to choose one I’d probably say the waterfront near the Pan Pacific hotel. I love having all the glass buildings in the background, particularly close to sunset when they reflect the most beautiful colours.”

If you had one piece of advice for a bride and groom, what would it be?
“Take a step back from all the outside influences (family, media, friends) and get a really clear idea of what’s important to you for your wedding and then make it happen”
