Modern Romance Productions

Modern Romance Productions offers a lot to Vancouver brides and grooms. They have a team of wedding photographers, videographers, and even provide bridal hair and makeup services. They’re a fairly new company, just started up in June of last year, and they’ve been enjoying taking on clients and building their portfolio since then. Look out for them in a few years, they have big expansion plans, eventually offering wedding planning services, invitation design and even be a place to buy wedding favours, making them a one-stop wedding shop! For consultations, they can either meet at their shared office near the Holdom Skytrain station or the Network Hub on Richards in Downtown Vancouver.

Ruby and Andy are the primary photographers for Modern Romance Productions. Ruby studied Interactive Arts and Technology at SFU where she learned most of her technical skills and she continued to expand her creative design skills by taking the Digital Graphic Design program at Vancouver Community College. Andy was a different story, he was a drafter turned wedding photographer when he discovered his true passion after shooting his friend’s wedding.

They consider their style to be “passive photojounalism” which they said means that they try not to get into the audience’s view. They move around quickly, get the shots, and move out of the way, very stealth-like. They have a colourful and vivid editing style… or sometimes go for a modern vintage look.

Mention that you found them on Vancity Bride and you can get their base package at the 2011 rate (a $500 savings): $1,500 and includes 6 hours of coverage with 2 photographers, a 16×20 photo canvas, a personalized DVD that contains all their images, and a before & after consultation. It takes 1 month to get the photos back and 2-3 months for a canvas, prints or album.

David and Phil make up the video crew for Modern Romance Productions. They use Canon 7D, T2i, T3i with a variety of professional lenses to record the special moments on your wedding day. A mobile editor is part of the team so you can have a same day edit to show during your wedding reception. Again, mention that you found them on Vancity Bride and get their basic package at the 2011 rate (a $550 savings): $1,600 for 6 hours and includes…

  • 2 videographers
  • Edited highlight video of up to 5 minutes
  • High definition video capture
  • Digitally enhanced colour and lighting
  • Personalized DVD cover and case
  • Before & after consultation

Both photography and videography special offers expire on June 30, 2012.

A Few Words With Ruby…

What sets you apart from others in the same field?
“We offer quality services with affordable prices. One of our goals is to provide our clients a smooth and non-stress atmosphere with us on their special day.”

What do you enjoy most about your job?
“We love to know our clients and about their love story. And the best part of our job is when we get to capture the very moments like the vows, kisses, and tears. We enjoy being a part of every couple’s special day. Another best part is when we see smiles on our client’s face when they see their amazing photos get printed on our 16×24 photo canvas and/or our wedding photo album.”

What was the most creative shot you took and how did you come up with it?
“This was to aimed for simplicity and clean composition for a ring photograph. We wanted to include the groom but also a close-up on the rings. Usually rings shots are commonly done in macro photography. We wanted a photo with a bit sense of humor; 2 rings placed in front of the groom’s face where his eyes were. A little cute ‘looking through my wedding rings’ photograph.”

Which part of the wedding is your most favourite to shoot and why?
“If we were really have to choose, getting prepared would be our favourite part of a wedding! The excitement, happiness and anticipation are really fun to photograph. Such as bride and her bridesmaids do funny little things like keep pulling their dresses before the groom arrives.”

Where is your favourite place/part of the city to take pictures for a shoot?
“Granville Island!”

What photography gear do you use?
“We use Canon 7D and 5D Mark II. Our lenses are 16-35mm f2.8, 50mm f1.8, 50mm f1.4, 24-70mm f2.8, 11-16mm f2.8, and 70-200mm f2.8 IS. We also use softbox lighting kit, 580 EXII flashes, umbrella reflector and handheld reflectors.”

How would you describe your video shooting and editing style?
“We shoot in a “photo-journalist” style. The last thing we want to do at a wedding is to go right up to the center of the aisle where the bride and groom is and cover the view of the guests with our bodies and camera gear. We see like photographers and shoot like ninjas. We’re fast and we’re in and out. We shoot a story close, but not so close that we are actually part of a story. You’d expect to see a variety of different cropping and angles. As for editing, we’d also like to tell the story like it is. That being said, you’d expect to see lots of cuts and lots of different content flying at you in a moderate and steady pace. What you won’t see in our videos is drastic colour changes, over-done blurring and cliche’ video effects.”

If you had one piece of advice for a bride and groom, what would it be?
“Get a wedding planner, prepare your own vows, get yourself both physically and mentally prepared for the big day, bring your best smiles to shine and enjoy the lovely day!”
