Vancity Vendor: Pure White Studio

Pure White Studio brings together 3 individuals with the same passion for photography. With a combined experience of over 20 years in the wedding industry, Derek Cheng, Jason Ho, and Mark Guilaran produce modern yet timeless photography for Vancouver couples.

But what brought the 3 together? I spoke to one of Pure White Studio’s photographers, Derek Cheng, and he said it was all about giving their clients the best customer service. They each bring their own specialty to the table and have become a well-oiled machine which allows clients to enjoy a better product, and in a shorter amount of time.

Pure White Studio specializes in wedding photography and provides products such as canvases, custom albums, wall prints, and other design services. They’ve recently launched their new photobooth rental service, which you get a discount on if you book a wedding photography collection with them. All their packages have full day coverage (up to 12 hours) and the service of 2 photographers. Their base package is $3,000, which includes an engagement session, high resolution files on a disc and an online gallery for a year. An additional $1000 will get you a $2000 album credit towards a beautiful custom design leather wrapped album. Discounts are available on weekdays and during the off season. Pure White Studio also offers wedding videography and is looking to offer boudoir sessions in the near future. To stay updated or see their latest work, follow them on Twitter and be a fan of their Facebook page.

Pure White Studio will be at the 33rd Annual Wedding Fair on January 7 and 8, 2012 – pop by their booth and say hello!

A Few Words With Pure White Studio’s Derek Cheng…

What do you have to offer for brides with lower budgets?
“We know that photography is by far the most important investment you can make for your wedding day. You wear the dress, walk down the aisle, and cut the cake just once, but your photos can forever capture those moments and details so that you can look back and relive those memories and emotions for the rest of your lives. We have different collections that include a variety of services and a la carte options as well.  All of our collections include unlimited coverage on the day of your wedding.”

What sets you apart from others in the same field?
“We are a full time studio – meaning photography is all we do, all the time.  We have our welcoming studio space for you to come view our work and get to know us.  You can also see samples of the options available for albums, canvases and wallprints.  When your photos are ready, we will invite you back to view them on our theater projector. We will also provide our expert guidance to help you create and design beautiful wall collections and albums to show off your equally stunning images. We’ve photographed weddings of all different ethnicities and sizes. We are also members of  Weddings & Portrait Photographers International (WPPI), Professional Photographer Association (PPA), Digital Wedding Forum (DWF) and ICE Society.”

What do you enjoy most about your job?
“My favorite part of my job is getting to know my clients, hearing their stories, capturing the moments and creating unique images that will be viewed for years to come.”

What was the most creative shot you took and how did you come up with it?
“This photo is a favourite of mine and was recently featured in Real Weddings magazine.  Astrid and Dustin’s wedding was just weeks from Christmas so they had a Christmas theme. Their ceremony was at the Burnaby Village Museum where this photo was shot. We got the warm soft light wrapping around them and I found a perspective where we got a hint of the Christmas tree from inside the building. It was a perfect image that summed up their whole wedding in one photograph – a beautiful and romantic winter wedding.”

Which part of the wedding is your most favourite to shoot and why?
“My favourite part of the wedding to shoot is the portrait session after the wedding ceremony because the couple is relaxed and the wedding party is ready to have some fun!  This is also my opportunity to play and use my creativity to create images that convey the love and happiness expressed by the couple.”

Where is your favourite place to take pictures for a shoot?
“Downtown Vancouver because there are different lighting conditions and a good variety of locations.  It is also always vibrant and full of life!”

Do you draw inspiration from other photographers?
“My greatest inspiration comes from the work of Jerry Ghionis, an internationally renowned wedding photographer who has won countless awards world-wide.  I recently had the opportunity to attend his wedding photography workshop when he made a stop here in Vancouver.”

What gear do you use?
“We use the Canon professional line of cameras (5D Mark II and 1D series), lenses and flashes.  We also have an arsenal of lighting equipment to accommodate any lighting conditions and to create any look for your wedding.”

If you had one piece of advice for a bride and groom, what would it be?
“Eat on your wedding day! We’ve seen so many brides and grooms skip dinner because they were so busy. Plan a non-interrupted session for you to eat and you’ll enjoy your night so much more!”
