Vancity Vendor: Raymond & Jessie Photography

Raymond Leung was already a professional wedding photographer when he married Jessie, a dance teacher and model at the time. After marrying Raymond, Jessie became inspired and developed many creative ideas for photographs. It wasn’t long before she picked up a camera herself and realized her passion for photography. She joined Raymond professionally in 2007 and together they have photographed over 100 weddings.

Richmond-based Raymond & Jessie Photography provides photography service for weddings, portraits, maternity/family sessions, professional headshots and commercial photography. They also offer Trash the Dress sessions for daring brides who want to do something different. Wedding packages start at $3,000 and include 6 consecutive hours with Raymond & Jessie, a private online gallery, and creatively edited full resolution digital files. They also provide custom designed photo albums, guestbooks, canvases, metal prints and slideshows as add-ons for an extra cost.

Raymond & Jessie’s shooting styles are a combination of photojournalism and fashion. They say they want their photos to be energetic so you will notice that most of their photos have vivid colours. Be sure to follow them on Facebook and check out their blog from time to time to keep updated with their latest work or find out about promotions. They tell me they have portrait session promotions between November and March!

A Few Words With Raymond & Jessie…

Why did you both want to become wedding photographers?
“Wedding day is one of the most important days in a person’s life. Being able to capture the most memorable and precious moments for people on this special day makes us feel our job is meaningful. This is why we want to become wedding photographers.”

What do you have to offer for brides with lower budgets?
“We can customize a package for lower budget brides to fit their needs and budgets.”

What sets you apart from others in the same field?
“We are strong at using off-camera flashes to creative dramatic and artistic lighting. Jessie used to be a dance teacher and fashion model, so she is good at guiding couples to do various fashion posing.

We are very flexible in our photo shooting. We always have detailed discussions with our clients before their wedding day, so we get to know what their personalities are and what styles they prefer. We will then tailor a photography plan to shoot something unique that fits their personalities and needs.”

What do you enjoy most about your job?
“We most enjoy the moments when seeing the joys and tears on our clients’ faces while we show them the wedding albums and photos.”

What was the most creative shot you took and how did you come up with it?
“This picture won a Fearless Award from Fearless Photographers, which is a unique photography directory of the world’s best wedding photographers who are not afraid to push the limits of professional wedding photography to surprise you with extraordinary wedding photos of your wedding day. We saw a bunch of small light bulbs at the hotel, and we thought it’d be cool if we could incorporate these lights in our photo.”

Which part of the wedding is your most favourite to shoot and why?
“This picture won an award in WPJA’s 2011 Q3 contest. We love shooting the moment when the bride and groom exchange vows. This is a precious and touching moment, when most of the time the bride and/or groom cry.”

Where is your favourite place/part of the city to take pictures for a shoot?
“We love shooting in the middle of the busy intersection in Downtown.”

If for some reason you aren’t able to photograph the wedding (due to illness or emergency), what is your backup plan?
“We have associate photographers who have been working with us for years. If unfortunately one of us cannot shoot (it never happened so far), we always have associate photographers to cover.”

If you had one piece of advice for a bride and groom, what would it be?
“Pick the photographer(s) that you truly in love with their works and style.”

    Jane & Jeff says:

Jessie is extremely rude! She immediately turn down my wedding when we mentioned it was a small size wedding. It seems like if you are not hosting expensive wedding or being a good looking couple, you will be automatically rejected. they were referred by our girlfriend, she did comment that their pre-wedding posing were good, the actual wedding photo shots were poor . Make sure to ask them to show you all the photos from wedding , not just the best selected one with pretty faces.

    Raymond Leung says:

According to our record of e-mails and meeting notes. Jessie or I never never met anyone called Jane and/or Jeff in 2012 or earlier. If our wedding photos were bad, how could his friend referred to us and Jane/Jeff contacted us to meet? It doesn’t make any sense, right?

Around 2012, most of the client meetings were done by me, Raymond. Jessie never went to a single meeting alone. How could she reject this couple? Our team have over 60 international/Canadian awards in these 10 years. It’s hard to believe a team with 60+ awards would produce poor wedding photos (and still in business today).

Our sample wedding highlights usually have 60~80+ photos but not just 10~20 good shots. If clients inquire for a complete set of wedding photos, we are happy to share in the meeting.

We never turned down any clients because of their races, religions, how good they looked, genders, etc. Our goal is getting lots of good and memorable photos during the big day.

In our old record around that time, we turned down a wedding shoot from a couple who wanted to pay a post-dated cheque as deposit (dated at a week before the wedding). I’m not sure if they were angry with us because of the difference in the understanding of deposit.

I hope they can take a deep breath and stop using fake names to leave untrue negative comments everywhere.

P.S. Our clients must be very happy about someone said we just showed “the best selected one with pretty faces”.

If you are looking for wedding photographers and you believe us (or believe your eyes), please let us know when you send us an inquiry (info@raymondleung.ca). I will get you the best deal that we can offer (such as album upgrade etc)!
